I've had plenty of highend basses and to me the best deals to be had are used Fender Vintage reissues. I've had two 62 jazz bass reissues and currently own a 57 pbass (lifer) reissue and they all sounded and played amazing.

Those are Kawai's that nail the Alembic vibe.

When people cut on Ibby, I say, "OH! Yeah. That's right.... Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are idiots. Ibby does suck huh?" (yes people say Ibby 6 string piccolo basses suck too).

Yes, they truly are. Much different from the SR series. They look so great, but the compliments I get about it are all about the sound.

well provided you can find one.. they have had a price increase this year they are running closr to $600.00 these days

ESP or LTD? I haven't played an LTD that I like a lot. Good? Sure. Great? Not really. Basically, you can get better for the money. ESPs, on the other hand, have been top-notch but pretty expensive, at least for my tastes.

I was so tempted to buy the BB414 at may local Music-Go-Round for $250. It was gorgeous... sparkle orange. Wish they had a picture of it on the site but if you can get down to the MGR in Aurora I'm sure my local (Louisville) will send it there.

I got one of those, in sparkle orange too. It's a brilliant, very underrated basses. It sort of seems that squier gets all the hype (and they do deserve to be hyped) for the VM and CV series, but people are definately forgetting these jewels. Best about the BB414 is defintaly how it records DI. Seriously, even the always so easy J bass is more tricky to get right. Every time I record with my BB I'm floored how it just plain works.

I think peavey grind series is also very underrated. I don't love the pickups, but they're good for the money. And it's a great platform to improve on. I just heard one with nordstrand fat stacks on it and my god do I have gas for the 6 string version now.

And peavey TL series is another total beast.

I like the tone of the Trabens I've played but they wouldn't "fit" in my roots/country gig.

Maybe if the bridge plate was in the shape of a horseshoe or cowboy hat?

LOL! EXACTLY my problem with them! When they come out with a bridge shaped like a cactus, I'm in!

Guild instruments in general are way under-rated. The company (through at least four owners for decades before FMIC bought it in 1995) has always had marketing problems so they aren't known. Other than the Starfire basses that Casady & Lesh used, most folks don't pay attention to them, nor regard them as the quality they are.

I guess they're mostly underrated due to the fact that they're not available in the USA. IMO same class as Sadowsky Metro, Fender USA Deluxe etcetera.
