Highschool woodshop build

Hey here are some pics of the finishing process i lost count in the number of coats but it think its around 10. im put ing as many coats needed to fill the pores in the padouk and black walnut. the tru oil goes on pretty thin. i love the way its looking already it really brought the black walnut to life. the padouk looks amazing and the amber color that it gave the neck looks awsome i love this tru oil stuff im definately using it on my next build.

and here is a picture of another unusual project. just to show what other stuff im into. i very much like unusual basses fender shapes make me sick.

Ahhhhh... I *do* so like a nice oil/varnish finish. Tru Oil is *super* easy, isn't toxic-smelling, and cleans up easily (I *do* wear latex gloves when applying it, as it's pretty sticky, and it's faster than scrubbing it off later).

i got that same volcom hoodie on page 7 as you do and im making me a bass in woodsII next year(was going to this year and just do it after school but never had time) and cut your hair you look like a damn hippie(as does everyone on TB)

There's no way you're 15 :eek:

That bass is fantastic, and I really wish I could've at least attempted something along those lines, just a lot simpler and less ambitious.... I dropped craft & design when he made me switch to a cabinet because my school strives for mediocrity :scowl:

But anyway, FANTASTIC! and congrats on the competition... and I still don't see soundclips ;)

Thanks for your kind words. But yea my shop teacher thought i was crazy when i first told him but now everyone is saying that i should teach the class. But if you wanna build one and get your teachers support just make a nice full size drawing with everything labled and neat thats what i did. but i still dont have it all togather to make soundclips.

O yea i had another question. well i have heard from sources that the same gunstock finish that i am using for the bass is also used for fretboards. is this true?? cause if it is im using it on my fretboard fur sure.

hey ppk, ive not posted yet but ive been lurking on this thread since the beginning - ive just got to say congratulations, i wish i could have done something like this at school! i love the shape, its totally yours!

what are the woods on the second bass?

thats fair enough - Fender make some fine instruments, i tend to use a good Jazz as a benchmark when im trying new instruments in a guitar shop. but i try all the other brands in the shop to see what else is on offer - and i hope i get to see a ppk bass in the shop one day.

Thanks! Well i dont have any exact woods yet but i think the neck is going to be black walnut or black limba. the body is going to be maple, wenge, cedar( not completely sure yet
) and for the top wood i think bocote but im not sure because im planning on a hollowbody so i dont know how it would react to weather changes because its going to be a thin top. but for the most part its mostly up in the air right now.

Hey im starting to get going on these fret dots. im putting dots on the side and on the surface of the fretboard along the g string with 1/8th inch brass round stock. im making a template if you will for the placement and i just so happend to have the perfect tools to do so.

my dad works at the GM tech center as a metal modle maker and they moved him up stairs and the mockup where he used to work is being trashed so they they were throwing away all of these great measuring tools, 123 blocks, height guages, 2 granite slabs( one shown and the other i donated to my school along with other goodies) but what i did was double stick taped a straight strip of wood to that angle block that you see and used the height guage scribe to place the fret distance. I didnt think a nice ruler would be accurate enough. so after these are all scribed on i will be plotting them out on my fretboard.

its getting busy in the shop. im defretting, filling, and intonating a guitar. I have one of my basses that needs a headstock fix. i have another bass that i am giving a complete upgrade and makeover (new pickups/covers, thumbrest, body contouring blah blah blah lots of work) and now i think i am repairing a few violins. And im reshaping and re contouring my friends guitar body the list goes on. im really glad schools almost over i need more time in the shop.

Paul, Tru-Oil isn't a hard enough finish for fingerboards. It would also show dull marks from string contact, and would wear through quickly (I'd give it less than a week, maybe?).

Finish your fingerboard in epoxy, or wipe-on poly. There is a tutorial on that, I think it's in the "how to" area...

yea thats what i thought. my dads friend is a bassist and mentioned it i didnt think it would work but i just wanted to make sure cause if it did id be putting it on in a heartbeat.

these are the fret position markers they are on the 1 3 5 7 9 12 ect... i used my grinder atatchement to level roughly and then i used vixen files to level them then i re sanded it afterwards to get rid of sctratch marks. the finish is practically done (i used like over 20 coats) it took alot to get rid of the padouk pores. anywho now i am going on my 4th of july vacation.

i put a check in the mail yesterday to get strings that will fit and other than set it up all i have to do is some polishing and surface the fretboard a lil to get rid of some drips from the finishing process. Ill try and get pics up asap ov the finished product and see if i can put a video up on the youtube.
