Hip hop is dead (?)

I couldn't tell one hip hop dude from another one by listening.

And non-rock fans probably couldn't tell Zep from Rush from AC/DC if they tried.

It's a matter of perspective. If you're a fan, there's no mistaking a Timbaland track from a Just Blaze joint.

Hip hop is alive and well in Immortal Technique, Blueprint, Brother Ali, Apathy, Tonedef (who's flow is just sick), and in tons of underground MCs, like Celph Titled and Sage Francis, and groups like Hieroglyphics and Demigodz.

Sometimes I wonder if people really read what the post is about and not just the topic. Let me clarify my point.

I thought it was interesting that Nas (one of the most critically acclaimed rapper. Illmatic is revered even among other MC's) came out with a song called "Hip Hop is Dead".

A lot of people equate success with albums sold/media exposure. K-Fed has probably sold more albums than most people on this board too. At the heart of the matter is not whether it is popular, it is whether it is moving to a higher level or in decline in terms of artistic expression.

I think that there are a lot of people "below the radar" making good music. It is probably good that those people are not that popular and "mainstream".

On a side note what do you make of articles like this? Is it all a part of the business, or is it more complicated than that?

I dunno about you, but I liked Black Star more than Mos Def or Talib Kweli's solo output. That album was brilliant on pretty much all fronts.
