hip hop recommendations?

i feel like it's time to expand my musical catalogue, and i've never given hip hop a fair chance. i'm looking for the real stuff, not commercial junk. so far i'm really digging

aesop rock
flying lotus
del the funky homosapien
a tribe called quest

i'm not differentiating between rap and hip hop electronica, although i certainly prefer my rap with good beats. hit me with what you've got.

There is a lot of good hip hop around, you just have to look for it. Anything that involves Afu-Ra, Mos Def, POS, Atmosphere, MF Doom, Edan, Dujeous, KRS One, Non Phixion, Talib Kweli, and Saukrates will get you off on the right foot.

Start with the classics - Dr. Dre`s "Chronic", P.E.`s "Nation", and yes, I`ll say it, Beastie Boys. Alot of these have real instrumentation, and some good grooves.

MIJ-VI....unless you can spit a dope rhyme or produce a hip hop cut that will get peoples heads knocking, I suggest you post elsewhere. Music that stems from European roots is not the only good or legitimate for m of music dude. Some folks like the rhyhtmic based music with roots in Africa. In classical european music, layers of harmonies and melodies abound, and the 'rhythm' section is way in the background somewhere chiming in every once in a while. Hip hop's roots are traced back to Africa who's musical origins are almost purely rhythmic, nary a melody in sight. In hip hop, even the MC's flows are a rhythmic cadence that dances around the snare on the 2 and 4. Please stick to your rock n' roll posts if negative ignorance is all you have to offer.

Shad-TSOL. Extremely solid cd, all of his stuff is great, but TSOL is his best. Also, while being very mainstream, eminem is probably the most talented rapper out there, so check out his stuff if you can handle the lyrical content.

I like Jay-Z alot. The Roots. Juvenile is awesome. Mos Def, is last album was on constant play on my iPod for awhile. Not real big on hip hop but that's some that i like. Some of it is just ridiculous.

The dude plays a 6 string...nuff said. Nothing at all wrong with that...but that in itself is a clear indication of where he comes from musically.

Goodie Mob (who I saw blow The Roots off the stage live with their live band back in the day. And the Roots are amazing, so that is really saying something!

I have all those. Took me a while to find Organix on vinyl though.


Some great suggestions - and I will stick with some old school stuff - haven't really looked at indie rap or hip hop lately anyway, so...

Public Enemy, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B and Rakim, Gangstarr, Whodini, EPMD, Jungle Brothers, The 7A3, Schoolly D, the Pharcyde (early) Black Eyed Peas, Boogie Down/KRS 1.

A really, really, really sweet album is The Brand New Heavies - Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1.
