Hipshot Ultralight VS. Gotoh Res-O-Lite tuners

Interesting enough a business card didn't work either. I ended up using some of the cardboard from the box and it was thick enough to give a tight fit. It was a bit disappointing though. Just glad to have them on...used the original screws because they were lighter.

Interesting. It sounds like they are way too small. And they didn't fit with the bushings left in?

I have basses with Hipshot HB3s, Schaller BMLs and recently got a set of Gotoh Res-o- lites for a parts jazz that I put together for my neighbors son. IMO they all perform the intented function equally well. Slight edge to the Res-O Lites for smoothness. As far as weight the Res-o-lites blow the competition away. The bass came in at 8.2 lbs thanks in part to them. I did not notice any bushing issue. The Neck is an Allparts drilled regular Fender style. Since it was a new neck there where no other holes to line up (the four per tuner) so installing them was a breeze. They are absolutely worth the hassle in finding them. All other things being equal the Gotohs are lighter.

I wanted to bump this because I think there's some misconceptions about prices of Gotohs...

The gold 350s aren't the only thing you have to buy...the 707s are the same exact thing but chrome...Invalid Link Removed

I'm only speaking in relation to NON-vintage tuners but I'm just throwing this up here because it seems like people think that ALL Gotohs have to be 350s and have to be the price of the gold finish.

Just get the 707s and save some coin

I'm 99% sure that web page is wrong. I don't think the 707s are Res-O-Lites. They are "standard" Gotohs but not Res-O-Lites. They're lighter than, say, stock Fender tuners, but heavier than Res-O-Lites. Someone tell me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am. Res-O-Lites have "Res-O-Lite" stamped on the back cover plate.

I've recently bought Hipshot HB6Y Ultralights in 3/8" and 1/2" sizes, and was very disappointed. They're sloppy, not smooth. I had to return one of the sets to Hipshot for replacements, which were much better but still not as smooth and precise as the Gotohs I've tried (GB704 I think, and GB350 Res-O-Lites).

Try finding Gotoh Res-O-Lites in Cosmo Black. Ishibashi will special order them. For nearly $200. Ouch!

Even at $115 they cost more than my bass! :D

I'm sure they're great tuners but I can't justify spending that much money on them. Maybe if I get a bass that's $1150+ I have no problem spending only 10% of the cost of the bass on its tuners.

If you've got a vintage style bass, the reverse keep the vintage style mojo going. Otherwise the standard is less of a pain in the butt. I quite often turn the wrong way on my P-Bass initially because all of my other basses are standard. If I go to a different set of tuners on that bass it'll still be a reverse set though.

I use Hipshot Ultralights in a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass and love them. Some have mentioned differences in tuner smoothness and I wonder how much of this relates to the state of the installed strings? Would newer strings result in smoother tuning action, and worn strings result in the perception of less smoothness?

At any rate, the tuners are a whole dimension in improvement over the stock tuners.
