Historical songs

Hillcrest Mine and Cold Missouri Waters by James Keelaghan
Crazy in Alabama by Kate Campbell. Cold Missouri waters is a masterpiece of songwriting- he tells the true story of the fire at Mann Gulch in Montana in 1949. James tells a 300 page story in 5 verses.
Cold Missouri Waters is a favorite of mine - thanks for bringing it up here.

'History' is the seventh word, in the lyrics... as in 'history repeats itself', maybe...

... again, and again...

I still contend it's about politics. There's no certainly mention of the Tay Bridge, Lexington or Ypres in there. I mean, Mama Weer All Crazee Now has the word mama in about five hundred times but it's not about motherhood or psychiatry :)

Tragically Hip - 50 Mission Cap

Fifty-Mission Cap
The Tragically Hip
Bill Barilko disappeared that summer
He was on a fishing trip
The last goal he ever scored
Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another till nineteen sixty two
The year he was discovered
I stole this from a hockey card
I keeped tucked up under
My fifty mission cup
I worked it in
I worked it in to look like that
It's my fifty mission cup
It's his fifty mission cup
And I worked it in
I worked it in
And I worked it in to look like that
And I worked it in to look like that
Bill Barilko disappeared that summer (in nineteen fifty one)
He was on a fishing trip (in a plane)
The last goal he ever scored (in over time)
Won the Leafs the cup
They didn't win another till nineteen sixty two
The year he was discovered
In my fifty mission cup
I worked it in
I worked it in to look like that
It's my fifty mission cup
It's his fifty mission cup
And I worked it in
I worked it in
And I worked it in to look like that
And I worked it in to look like that
It's my fifty mission cup
It's my fifty mission cup
It's my fifty mission cup
It's my fifty mission cup

When they turn the pages of history
When these days have passed long ago
Will they read of us with sadness
For the seeds that we let grow?
We turned our gaze
From the castles in the distance
Eyes cast down
On the path of least resistance
Cities full of hatred
Fear and lies
Withered hearts
And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons
Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering
The sacred halls of truth
Ancient nobles showering
Their bitterness on youth
Can't we find
The minds that made us strong?
Oh can't we learn
To feel what's right and what's wrong?
What's wrong

Cities full of hatred
Fear and lies
Withered hearts
And cruel, tormented eyes
Scheming demons
Dressed in kingly guise
Beating down the multitude
And scoffing at the wise
Whoa can't we raise our eyes
And make a start?
Can't we find the minds
To lead us closer to the heart?

What historical event was that about?
