Historical songs

Bluegrass is full of songs about historical events that are very regional. Topics include; train wrecks, train robberies, coal mine accidents, murder, civil war, etc. Blues music is also full of songs about historical events.

Iron Maiden may have a dozen historical songs. U2, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones all have a few. The Beatles probably had a few, but none I can quote at the moment.

There are many more than you think. Here are several.

Big Big Train’s more recent albums are full of this type of song. One example: Winkie from the album Folklore tells the true story of when a homing pigeon helped find survivors of a downed plane in the early days of radio. Probably helps to be British to fully appreciate the songs, but as a non-Brit I still enjoy the storytelling.

And then there’s the song about Harry Truman on Tommy Shaw’s “The Great Divide.” Purely tongue in cheek but gives me a smile every time I hear it, especially about how Stalin couldn’t have been much of a piano player due to his small hands.
