Hit the ground running

Written communication can be challenging.

I'm guessing if you've compiled a list of 600 songs, you wouldn't have an issue learning 10 songs in a few days or weeks time - and I would have included something to that affect.

They likely missed out by not responding with something along the lines of;
"could you learn the other 10 songs and be ready for a rehearsal by....?

would you guys be able "to hit the ground running" with this list.
For an "unknown entity" - likely not; The intensity of my preparation is influenced by my desire to play the gig/songs. ;)

I suspect this one is similar to a few groups I’ve tried out for - they want you to “know” the song, and when you get to rehearsal, it turns out they powerchord the general riffs, and “put their own spin on it” which means they don’t even try a note-for-note (ish) cover or true-to-original arrangement. If you had said”oh yeah, I can bash through those songs - you don’t change any keys, do you?” he’d have been like, “my man!!! Welcome to the band!! We call ourselves Velvet Steel!!!”

That is...not a mix of songs I would personally compile for a setlist...or want to listen to together :sour:

Putting Kryptonite, Sharp Dressed Man, All the Small Things, and Take It On the Run in the same hour of a playlist seems...incongruent to my ears lol
Yeah, I would love to see the kind of places these guys work! OP might have missed out on their dream of playing at friends backyards who are too nice to say no.

Personally, if I needed the work I'd've learned the songs I didn't know and gone and auditioned. Maybe they're a fit, maybe not. Maybe the two better players in the band are ready to split and will need a bass player. Maybe I need to get back out there and work the rust off while making some new connections...

But, then also- Sublime? Ugh.

I'm an old school classic/southern/rock guy between bands. Had the following interaction on CL. I responded to their listing and they sent back this set list.

I sent back "I've played about half of those. Pretty good songs." And followed that up stating that some of them I'm not familiar with.

The guy wrote back - "Ok. Thanks for being honest. Looking for someone to step in and hit the ground running though. But thanks!!!"

I've played in a bunch of different bands and have compiled a list of over 600 songs I've played in bands over that time.
I take it that I dodged a bullet - would you guys be able "to hit the ground running" with this list.

I'd say I've probably played 1/2 of those at some time. I supposed that's good and bad news.

But I think you dodged a bullet. I wouldn't want to spend a few days learning the rest of them only to go to a practice and find out that other elements of the band aren't right. Is the hang good, do they play to loud, are there tempos good, raging alcoholics/druggies, do they arrive on time to practice, are they just not people you want to associate with?

I wouldn't invest the time unless I could put a positive check mark on some of that other stuff. I haven't auditioned in a long time because I've been in groups that stayed together. But when I did I would offer to know 10 songs of their choosing and let's get together. There remains the possibility that even if I know the material they may not like me. Hard to believe but that's happened too.

Yeah, you dodged a bullet. This set list sounds like amateur hour at the karaoke bar.

I don't "know" any cover tunes, but I'll hit the ground running if there are decent charts and/or demo tracks for pretty much anything.

Yes, no doubt I could learn the songs. For me knowing half of their list would be enough for the initial meetup where we decide if the fit is enough for me to learn the other half of their songs.
