I found a used Hiwatt 100W Custom Slave, which is seemingly like a custom DR103 only without a preamp. Would it sound good on bass with a Sansamp BDDI? I didn't find anything about it on Hiwatt's pages, so I guess it's discontinued. BTW, I'm using a Mesa Boogie Roadready 1000 cab.

Hiwatt 100W Custom Slave with a Sansamp BDDI?

I'd look for something sweeter than a sansamp. It could turn an ampeg B-25 or old fender bassman into a real fire breather if you took the pre out. 
I really don't have any other pre-amps. Been scouting after an MXR M80 as I like to have everything floor-based.
Pick up one of the range of ART TubeMP preamps for about $40. That should drive the slave with out a problem. EQ from your bass if active and you might like the result from a passive bass too.

PS You could always get a tech to add the proper pre-amp circuitry to the amp. IIRC Hiwatt had one standard chassis for all their amps.

A sansamp should do the job fine.
I run a 200w tube slave with my sansamp (live setup)
I have a tube pre that I use for recording etc - but I find the portable nature of a stompbox hard to go past.
The only issue the sansamp may have, will be the slight lack of input "oomph" to drive the Hiwatt power section - just turn up the volume!
On a side note - I've used 120w Orange OR120's with bass before - and they had heaps of volume, so you should be right for brute power. A clean tone is a whole different arguement.

I open this thread again because I found a Hiwatt Custom Slave 200 to sell in my area. Its price seems to be good (1000 euros).
But I don't really know this stuff and the guy told me I'll need a DI box as a preamp.
Do you know this head ? Does anyone own this kind of thing ?
I'd be glad to have more information ( even if it seems that I can trust the seller).

oh man. i´d give one of my kidneys for one of those. i´ve a Hiwatt Custom 100 DR-103.. and i´d love to add an slave to it.
Just grab it. Don´t let it go. Then you´ll see what you do with it. If you find it useless, i´ll buy it from you in about a year

Technically, does the quality of the DI box is important ? I know that I can use the head alone because it has two tubes in preamp, but it's just 50/100 watts in this case. So I need a DI to use it on stage.

i don´t think you need a DI. Not really sure. Just log into the HIWATT forum i posted above. There´s a lot of people who knows a lot about them.
Buy the slave 200.

i´m sorry.. but NO WAY ! Sacrilege ! Don´t ever mod a Vintage Hiwatt that way! Just get the proper gear to use it the way it was intended to be used.
i'm normally the same but if its one of the 80s onward ones i wouldn't really be that bothered since it is a slave.
Slaves are worth a bit less than the full amps - I.E. DR103 or DR201... or even a DR405 
But then again, if its Reeves era, leave it alone - DONT MOD IT.
