First of all, this is not a perfect solution, but in my opinion it's much better than the Hofner strap.
I recently purchased a Hofner 500/1 CT bass and have been searching for a nice strap for it. Much like everyone who owns a Hofner, I discovered that attaching a strap directly to the strap buttons causes the body to pivot forward.
I searched the web and learned how most players run the thin end of the strap under the neck relief, then down around the bass body and back up and attached it back to the strap. I tried this with a couple of my Levy straps but had two problems: (1) the adjustable end of the strap wasn't long enough and (2) the padded strap was too thick to go under the relief. I needed a longer strap with no backing material.
I ended up purchasing the Hofner strap for $59 from North Coast Music and was deeply disappointed. I couldn't believe how cheaply it's made in comparison with the Levy straps. I installed it and while it did the trick, it was one of the most uncomfortable straps I've ever owned. Also, I believe the cheap materials used could actually damage the finish so it was back to the drawing board.
I contacted Levy direct and explained what I was needing. After several recommendations that I determined wouldn't work, they recommended a discontinued model that appeared to be the solution. They still had some in-stock in all three colors (black, brown & walnut) but you won't find them on any of the vendor websites. Since I needed to order from a vendor I called my Sweetwater rep and gave him the part number and color. It arrived yesterday.
I installed it and it's so much better than the Hofner at about 1/2 the price and I didn't need to tie it to itself above the neck. After running it under the neck relief and around the bottom of the body I simply attached it to the strap button..
PLEASE NOTE: These straps fit ONLY the 'Made in Germany" models and the "Contemporary Series" or CT! They will not work on the cheaper models like the Ignition and such.
If you've been disappointed with the strap options for your Made in Germany and Contemporary Series Hofner Basses and would like an alternative, you need to contact your dealer of choice NOW as these are discontinued models so supply is limited and there are no plans to make any more.
Here are the part numbers / info on all three color:
