Hofner Icon Club bass!!

getting back to the dead spot thing, it's really weird, on mine, in some situations i absolutely don't perceive it, no loss of sustain, totally even sound, but at a couple loud gigs it seemed like the low frequencies really didn't come thru when i played 5th fret E string....

i'm wondering about how the hollow body's sympathetic vibrations may factor in... or vibrations of the tailpiece? sorta loud gig tomorrow night and some 45-105 short scale Sunbeams coming soon, we'll see how it goes. i still love this bass and may even pick up a 2nd one... sure would love to see some pix of that dark cherry burst!

i have the trans. black, i can't get over what a great looking bass it is.. :D

also, at last night's semi-loud gig (jazz and r&b at a bar), no issues w/ 5th fret E string.. i think it only acts funny at really loud gigs where my bass sound from the amp starts interacting w/ the hollow body.. at least that's my theory... i'm new to the hollow body bass world, and i'm willing to believe there may be some anomalies to experience as part of the trip.

just put some short scale DR Sunbeams on (45-105), they feel good, more "like a bass", i might even have to tighten the truss rod a touch, the factory strings were so light (40-95) they didn't really pull on the neck at all.

glad to hear it, no-logic. and take heart, here's a guy on a German Hofner, killer flats w/ pick sound, but if you observe closely his 5th fret E string sounds slightly dull compared to other notes... i probably only noticed b/c i was looking for it. cheers!

Hello to all..Long time lurker here...Decided to get in on some of this...I have a few basses,and I especially like Hofners as well...Here's my two Hofners...A new Icon Club,and my German 500/1...this was the first 500/1 made by the Hofner custom shop which I was fortunate enough to get hold of..

welcome, okc-zee! thx for sharing your pix... nice pair of Hofs! nice touch w/ the tea cups on the Icon, btw. :)

may i ask what strings you like on your Hofners? i've just tried some short scale Sunbeams, b/c i wanna exploit the versatility of rounds... mixed results... great direct recorded sound, but not what i was hoping for live on a couple gigs... probably gonna put factory strings back on for now...

Interesting. You're right about that. Mine is about the same....maybe a little more pronounced but close. Thanks for the clip!

To my ears,the German basses and the Icons w/ the same strings are similar,but the German Hofners to me have just a little more 'thump' and warmth in their sound..You can definitely tell the difference in craftsmanship between the two as well,which I kinda feel has a lot to do with the slight difference in sound as well..I'm really surprised with this Icon though..Great Hofner bang for the buck...

I had pyramids on both,but changed to Labellas (50-100) on the Icon...

My experience was similar comparing a friend's German made Hofner with my Icon. For the type of gigs I do, the Icon is perfect, and can get a close approximation. I love mine! I also use LaBella flats on mine.
