I live in Canada, but I usually get my Hofner stuff from Thomann. Great service and it gets to me quick enough.
Expecting anything else?

Well, as a matter of fact...
An Ignition SE is on its way from Thomann, should arrive tomorrow. Will post a pic and a number request once it's safely in my hands. I figured it was time for a new guitar too, and managed to hunt this down on Reverb, now on its way to me from Germany:
It's a Galaxie 176 CT reissue from 2011. I think the teacup knobs are replacements for some very plain knurled nickel knobs, but I love 'em! Missing vibrato arm but don't care as I wouldn't have used it anyway. My only beef is that DHL is shipping by container ship. Damned if I know why they do that, shipping was over $135. We have these things called aircraft now, might want to look into that.

I have no reference point on pickup configuration as I've never played another Hofner. Maybe someone can explain the differences between standard and Cavern spacing.
These are great instruments to play acoustically late at night, when everyone at home is sleeping.
Before I bought a Cavern, I'd checked out several other violin basses.
And chose the Cavern because it had a fuller and deeper sound.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I preferred it among over 6 other violin basses with several pickup configurations. (blade and staple pickups)
German, HCT, or Ignition? I have the HCT Cavern and it's my favorite. Between the pickup spacing and the Diamond pickups, it has a deeper tone. And you can actually use the bridge (center position) pickup.
Totally agree with DrSteve. The HCT Cavern Club I have is really versatile.

I started playing bass 2 years ago (15 years playing guitar only) and the Hofner Ignition Violin Bass was my first one (just like this). Since I enjoy playing "heavier" things, I bought a Fender Jazz Bass and my Hofner stayed untouched for almost 6 months. In the last weeks, I picked it, and fell in love again but I feel that it has way less quality than my Fender. I think that this Hofner is the "entrance bass" of the Hofner Series, so I would love to "improve" it and need your guys' help with it.
Questions
1. My biggest problem right now is that it seems to not hold the tuning for too long (I'm using the Pyramid Chrome-Nickel Flat Wound 4 String Bass Short Scale 40-100 ). Would it help if I changed the tuning pegs (the one that came with it is a plastic tune peg)? Which model would you suggest?
2. I don't want to touch the "electronic" part of it, but is there another thing that could improve the bass, like changing the bridge?
3. I have family in the UK at the moment, and since I live in a third world country, this could be a great opportunity.Would you guys suggest any trustworthy online dealer in the UK?

I honestly can't comment on the quality of the factory Ignition tuners as my Ignition had already been upgraded to Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite machines. From what I see they are a direct replacement, and so far the tuning stability has been very good.

There is little in the way of replacement bridges but the bridges are not 'fitted' at the factory. You can do it yourself or have a workshop do it. I haven't done mine yet but I know from experience working on my daughter's double basses that it will make a big difference to the tone, sustain and consistency when I do eventually get around to it.
Bass Direct in Warwick are OK as dealers Home They keep strings for Hofner basses but don't keep the Grover tuners.
If you want a top-quality setup and/or someone to fit the bridge then Charlie Chandler's is probably your best bet. I've used them a number of times and always with good results:

I always upgrade my Ignition tuners to HCT tuners. You don't have to drill any holes and the HCT tuners are relatively inexpensive and can be found on Reverb.
I haven't had issues with the bridge.
