Hofner-(not just Beatle Basses)-Group Part 2

Those of you who suffered through my tirade last week will be relieved to learn that my Ignition arrived today through Norman's Rare Guitars. I highly recommend them.
I need to wait until next Wednesday for my LaBellas to arrive from Imperial Guitar & Soundworks in Newburgh, New York. When they do, I'll want to set up the bass so it's in prime musical shape. I've never asked anyone else to put my strings on for me (since 1977), but I might with this one. I think I'll bring this to Gryphon Stringed Instruments in Palo Alto and ask them to string it and set the intonation and action. If there are any high frets, I'll ask them to fix it. I'd be out of my depth there.
I have an incredibly naive question. What do you do with the thin foam pad that comes under the bridge? Does that bridge move freely when the strings are off? Wow. It seems you'd need to take that pad off so the bridge makes undampened vibrational contact with the body. Duh, I guess.
So that leads me to ask, do you need to remember where you set it every time you change strings? Does that mean intonation needs to be checked and possibly readjusted with each string change? I'll just hope the LaBellas last a while.

Stock strings on it still, but have some LaBella's in the mail.
Yes you'll want to remove the styrofoam. It's there to protect the finish on the body during shipping. Once you get your intonation right, take note of where the bridge sits and make a small dot at the rear corner top and bottom, with black sharpie, on the body. You can double check your intonation any time with your tuner. Also, if you change strings one at a time, the bridge should never move.

if you check my posts a couple of pages back, every time i loosen or change the strings, i mark where the bridge is by attaching pieces of tape at the ends and corners of the bridge. but i always check and readjust the intonation anyway, so the old position is just a re-starting point. oftentimes i end up near or close to where it was.
Also, I was at the Guitar Center here in VB two days ago, the Ignition that I saw there about two months ago is still there, with a vintage 500/1 next to it.
So, I checked out both of them, the vintage one is in bad shape, the finish is cracked all over, aside from the signs of use and abuse by the previous owner. The Ignition....well, we have heard enough of them already.
It is made in Indonesia, as expected.

thanks, yeah the color is real nice, a cool seafoam green style color. only had it for about a day or so, it feels great, and i can coax out some traditional hofner tones even wioth the stock roundwound strings.
heres a demmo i did, since its hard to find footage or sound clips of this bass. notice the string are the stock day old roundwounds. changing to flats soon though.

Hey Thank you for posting the demo on your Galaxie. It seems to have the tone you could expect if you put the 500/1 staple pick ups on a solid body.
My Ignition came with the "Hofner Original Violin Bass Strap," complete with instructions in German and English.
The photos show it going through and under the "fingerboard extension." I suspect the seller just tossed in the strap and 500/1 instructions to be nice, so I'd have a strap. But, of course, there is no fingerboard extension on the Ignition.
Can I use this strap on this bass?

Well, it's made to go around and under the neck. I'd say ebay, then buy the same type of strap to be used on strap pins. It's probably worth something there. I use a 3" wide leather strap, and find it comfortable.
so i decided to look under the pickguard for my Hofner Galaxie HCT, I'm always curious about what's going on under the guard of new basses. i noticed it said "Alpha 500k" on the pots. so i was wondering, would it be worth it to switch to CTS? and noticeable difference, i ask cause i always hear people talk on and on about CTS. Also i was wondering what pickups, i heard they were the same as the ignition/icon, but with the "CT" in the name, i would think it would have german pickups. Under the pickups was no writing, just a "ROH" sticker, same as you get on Behringer pedals, must be some inspection thing in germany...
I figure someone browsing this thread might be interested. I'm selling a set of Labella Beatle Bass strings as well as TI jazz flats that came off my club bass if'n anyone was looking. They are listed in the accessories classifieds. Just FYI not trying to junk mail solicit or anything
I'm interested: how do those straps work? From pics of Macca's bass they look like they go through the neck? Got any pic's? I have a Viola but they have the traditional strap pins

Does any of you know why is it so hard to find a brand new/used Höfner Icon Beatle bass nowadays? There's nothing! I'd really like to get one.

¡Como caído del cielo! He ido a Bolívar varias veces en los últimos meses y nada, sólo copias o de plano ni eso. ¿Sabes en qué tienda? ¿Más o menos a qué altura? Igual y pueden traer más. Y 6K está a excelente precio.
