If you ever want to post your photos so that "proudly hosted on photobucket" is not plastered all over them, you can upload directly to Talkbass from your computer by using the "upload file" button.

Also when you upload there is a "Full Image" button that you can press and it will display your images at full res. Make sure your cursor is where you want the photos to appear, then press Post Reply.
Your images will then show up at full size. You can also enlarge one at a time by pressing the "Full Image" button to the side of the image. This can be helpful when placing images between text like I have done with this post.

Yay! I've been looking for this group for awhile. Are numbers given out or do we just hangout and post pics, discuss Hofners and such?

Lovely collection, @Doctor Intrepid! (Also, nice cats.) I'd be curious to hear your compare/contrast thoughts, since you have the whole Hofner spectrum--both import models, a new German, and a vintage German.
When I have a chance I offer some more details, but right now I can say I love them all! I prefer the hollow bodies, but the HCT (semi-hollow) also has a great tone. I only prefer the hollow bodies because the are more 'woody' to my ears. My number one is the fretless, and number two is the 68. They all sound similar and different. They all have a deep and punchy Hofner tone, but the tone varies due to pickups and strings, pickup spacing and hollow/semi-hollow variations (and fretless too, of course). I have white nylon tapes on the fretless, flatwounds on the Ignition, and roundwounds on the HCT and 68. I want another fretless, to use flatwounds on it, but cannot afford another German made Hofner at this point. So I bought another Ignition and will get a local luthier to remove the frets. My 68 will likely become a case queen soon, and I'll use the HCT for similar purposes.

Even has a cracked rear pickup ring! Nice! Mine has that and is currently being held together with tape and a rubber band.

I just picked up a new Hofner Ingition Beatle bass in trans black. There are a few mods planned, not to replicate Paul's bass, but to make it unique and functional. First up, I have to replace the tuners, but find something that fit the Hofner aesthetic. So after searching the net, I found these Grover Rotomatics with pearloid tuner keys. I did have to rheam the holes a bit larger, but then installation was easy, with four of the mounting screw holes actually lining up.

I purchased an Ignition 500/1 to mod as well. I'm going to get the frets pulled, and eventually I'll get some German pickups and possibly new tuners. Both Musician's Friend and Sweetwater have some cool colors for their Ignition basses.
I think your are correct about the stock pickups, but changing the out gives me something to do while avoiding buying another German Hofner. Love the German ones, but it is a hobby for me so I can't really justify the indulgence. That's my kid's College money!
Since the mounting brackets on the late 60s and 70s Hofners (up to the 90s I think, actually) are very similar to the Ignition basses I was thinking a Hofner blade pickup might fit nicely. I could be wrong, though.

Anybody swapped out the tailpiece for a shorter one? Am wondering whether I can get my Hofner to take long scale strings by swapping out the tailpiece to a shorter one?
