I had a 5000/1 Deluxe Rosewood Back, and yes, it did sound different. A little "woodier"; Deeper/Richer. But then again, the pickups were gold (plated?), so that may have been a factor as well.

Yeah, looks great! I love the Hofner violin basses, though, as I have five of them. That is a nice version in my eyes. A mixture of classic design and new elements.

Being a total sucker for Sonic Blue, that works for me. Dig it! Now if it were just a Club.

Held its value well, if the asking price is met, almost what a new German-made Club would cost.
Were Cavern Clubs ever made in the Contemporary or Ignition/Icon series ?
I for one would like to hear how the pickup of the 'middle' position would sound alone.

The red one at GC would be more to my budget, but then there is the CITES issue on the Rosewood fretboard, because I live in Canada and the bass is elsewhere.

Yeah, I live in Canada too so I know what you mean. There are options, though. Cosmo music sells Hofners in Canada, and you can order Hofners from Musician's Friend, Thomann and Bass Direct.~

Correct me if wrong, but ordering from sellers outside of Canada puts the responsibility for the CITES BS on the buyer though.
And Cosmo seems not to keep many Hofners in stock.
Also, funny, the description for the Red Ignition Club at GC says that it's GREEN.
And I wonder why the price is so low ? (Under $350 CAD)
The Sunburst Ignition Club next to it is close to double the price.
Even the Regular price for the Red one is much less than for the Sunburst.

As far as I know CITES is the responsibility of the seller. I bought an Ignition from Musician's Friend last January with no issues. Also, CITES requirements are going to be removed soon and Hofner has non-CITES models you can order from Thomann.

I am getting my self one for XMAS. Does anybody have any suggestions for the proper short scale flat wound strings for this bass? GHS, Rotosound or La Bella. I have heard that La Bella has had some problems with the E string breaking.
The Höfner is a short-scale bass, but it does not use short-scale strings; because of the tailpiece, you need approximately 34" from ball end to silk. If you get La Bella, make sure you look for "For Höfner Beatle Bass."
Doctor Intrepid: I owe you a reply on the status of my search for a G500/1B Super Beatle Bass... I apologize for the delay. I very recently came into possession of a very minty 1973 G500/1B Super Beatle Bass, purchased out of the collection of a close personal friend. This bass has been the only item on my G.A.S. list for the last several years... it was totally worth the wait. If I may, I'd like to share some photos below:
For a 46 year old instrument, she is in amazing shape. All electronics work perfectly. We put a full setup on her and she plays and sounds amazing. I hope others in this forum will enjoy the superb materials, masterful craftsmanship and intrinsic beauty of "Goldie"! IMHO this bass represents the height of artistry coming out of Hofner Germany.
