Holding multiple driver licenses?

I've already sent my query to the DMV, but since it is the DMV, I won't be expecting a reply for "several business days or more":D

Does anybody know about the laws and regulations concerning holding multiple driver licenses, specifically New York state. I'm originally from CT but I attend college in NY. I'm looking for EMS jobs and tonight just found out a friend of one of my suitemates works for one of the local EMS services; if I apply and get hired we can theoretically work the same shifts and I'll just hitch a ride with her to work since I don't have a car. The problem standing in my way is that in the job listing, they require a valid NYS driver license.

Anybody know anything about this?

My understanding is that there is reciprocity among the states regarding driver's licenses. In other words, your CT license is valid in NY state.

I would contact the EMS outfit and ask them if your CT license is sufficient, as you reside in NY for school, but legally reside in CT. The "valid NY state license" thing may just be a convention, or it may indicate that only permanent legal NY state residents are eligable for the position.

Of course, if your an illegal alien, just go to the DMV and get a "Spitzer Special." You won't even need ID for one of those... ;) :D

From the NY DMV Web site:

General Information About Driver Licenses
You must have a NYS driver license or a valid driver license from another US state or from Canada to drive in NYS. In most cases, you can drive in NYS if you have a valid driver license from another country. See "Drivers From Other Nations". The minimum driving age in NYS is 16.

If you become a resident of NYS, you must get a NYS driver license within 30 days and surrender your out-of-state driver license. Normally, you cannot have a NYS driver license and a driver license from another state, but there are exceptions. It is a violation of Federal law to hold more than one commercial driver license (CDL).

The NY State Driver's Manual is even clearer:

Non-Resident and New Resident Drivers
If you are a resident of another state or country and hold a valid driver license there, you may legally drive in New York State. You should not apply for a New York license. Apply for a New York license only after you become a resident of this state. Then, to remain legally licensed, you must apply for a New York State driver license within 30 days after establishing residency.
