Holy Cow! 110 B string!

I used to do that out of necessity ;) Nowadays, even though the majority of the music I play live was recorded with flats, I'm liking new roundwound zing, to the detriment of my wallet's contents. But yeah, old rounds have a sound you just can't get with flats.

Let me up this topic!

I'm a huge fan of light strings, my favourite sets sre Thomastik JF344 for flats and Rotosound Funkmaster for rounds.
I had a 5-string bass last year (sold not being used much), a Yamaha BB415, and I tried two sets on it: hi beam 45-65-85-105-130 and TI JF345, with a 136 B.
both sets sounded dark (the bass did it even, obviously. It's not a bright bass) and the B was really muddy...
Better with the TI, ironically, because they have a little less bass frequencies and more mids.

I was thinking of buying a new 5 string bass, and I thought that, loving so much the Funkmaster would lead me to buy them, but for the B?
110? 115? 120? Will it be good?

Considering that they are 30-50-70-90, I think that a 110 would be good, but I don't know... maybe a 115 will be better for tension balance? Like a 130 in a 45-105 set, right?

anyone have samples of this kind of B?

Just to let you know, I play with a 95 E string and my B is 110. It sounds perfectly balanced to my ears, but it may be different on different basses. I'd really urge you to try it out, I was very pleasantly surprised and for the first time, my B string matched my E string in terms of tone. I use DR Hi-Beams, by the way, a great string if you like bright stainless steel roundwounds.

For my taste the Hi Beam are not so bright :P I've even tried the 30-90 gauge, but Rotos are way brighter and with more mids.

The kind of 5-string I'm after is a Precision style, like the BB415 or the new Squier vintage modified, so I guess they'll work well, to give me a clearer sounding B

It's definitely worth trying out.

I did a quick search in the TB store and couldn't find anything lighter than 125, amazon has a set of Dunlop 120.
does anyone know where I could get a set of 115 or 110.

this would be for a fretless

thanks

If this is for a 5 string bass, you should just buy an individual 110 string and then get a very light 4 string set starting at 95 for the E string. Just my recommendation.
