Homage to Devastator: "Arachnophilia"

I've never worked with burl, which seems like one big constant grain direction change. How do you pattern rout it without chipping or tearout? I realized I suck at template routing when I got tearout on my maple Ric body, even using the accepted practice of partial climb cuts. Curious to see how you pull this off!

So am I !! haha
I haven't done a whole lot with burl either...
Even though the "grain direction" is super crazy & unpredictable, the stuff is also very dense (with the exception of the hundreds of tiny checks).
So ....I have a feeling that by using a very sharp, solid carbide, three spiral fluted pattern bit....
And not leaving more than about 1/8" overhang that needs trimmed....
And, even filling the little checking cracks PRIOR to routing....
And using appropriate cut/ feed direction....
And, completely avoiding the tips of the horns...like stopping 1/2" shy of the tips and sanding them in....
:nailbiting:
(.....Deep breath)..... I should be ok

Do you have a particular brand of pattern bit you like? I tried a cheap Yonico spiral pattern bit, and it vibrated so bad I couldn't use it, either a defective bit or too much runout on my Crapsman router. Anything over 1" straight bits seems to leave a poor finish or tear out. I realize I need to get a better router with 1/2" collet.

I can check when I get to my shop...but I believe it is either a Whiteside or Amana, 1/2" shank & cutting diameter. Solid carbide 3 flute, dual bearing. Expensive ($120)

Thanks Rock
I think the 1/2" shank is a big part of my problem, been planning on getting a decent 1/2" collet Porter Cable for years, never pulled the trigger. Long bit + thin shank = crappy cut in my experience. I'll shut up and watch you work now!

Cool.
Yeah, I'm not looking forward to carving the bevels on either side....I typically never use a chamfer bit at all because I like bevels to flow differently as they make their way around a body... but on this I might make an exception....?
IDK yet.
I can't imagine it working very well using a router out at the ends of the horns, due to near zero support for the base plate. Unless you make yourself a huge-in-one-direction base plate extension.

I use a sort of "U" shape plate of 3/4" MDF on top of the body... (My pattern/flush cut bit is long enough) ...it can shift back & forth enough to allow access to both sides of horns and keeps the router base high enough to clear the fretboard so I can get close to the neck on the inside of the horn.
It provides stability for the router base, and grants greater access.
;)

Definitely following your build, because I'm actually in the process of building one myself!!
@Rip Topaz ...do you happen to have a build thread going for yours?
I would like to check that out as well.
I do not, but I'll be sure to share pix when I get it finished. I'm in the home stretch now. Just did the fretwork yesterday.

Hey, @Rip Topaz ...that sucker looks great!
A very accurate repro of the Devastator.

Mine is going to have some significant modifications...but should still very much retain the overall ...."flavor"?:***:

(Sorry I missed this a month ago...I don't think I am getting alerts from this thread for some reason?)

So... I am sorry to say....there is no way in hell, (or on earth) I am going to have this build done before winters end... (March 20th)
I just finally finished the Andromeda build...
But first... I have another commissioned version of my "Hreiđmar" /"Brunhilde" style...
(I have dubbed that shape: "MythosX" )
This one will be a 5 string though...and be topped with some tasty cocobolo!
& have some other bells & whistles...
It's for a new client who I would really like to make a sweet bass & good impression on...
(
Ok...yes I try to do that for every customer)

Anyway...I am just saying that, regardless of how much I would love to have this
Devastator/ "Arachnophilia'' build, be involved in the Winter Challenge buildoff...
I just don't think I am even going to come close to finishing it in time.

Just saying...
