If you are build for yourself, then screw what anyone else thinks. Yea, the lower horn is different than what people are used to, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I think you have an attractive design and wish you the best of luck in building this beauty.

I completely agree! I like the design and think it flows well when I visualize the bass in "playing position" (diagonal). If you're happy with the look, start building and forget the rest of us. But pics, please, as you go!!

Seeing this mock-up made me change my mind! I think you shouldn't change a thing! That lower horn didn't sit well with me originally, but now I think it really works!

I reckon add a tiny bit more round ness to the back of the bass so its more of a circle not a straight line. Just my opinion though! I really like both horns but I reckon itd look GREAT in singlecut!

It does need a bit more round on the back. I am working on a single cut version right now. A single cut bolt on

Ugh! Not me. That lower horn looks as ugly (and in the way) as I first envisioned.
I'm reminded of the Hunchback of Notre Dame because of that lower bout and the way it gives the neck area of the body that hump shape.
As I said before, I really like everthing else about the design.

How about the Q-Bass (Quasimodo )???

Bottom line, the others are right. If this is just a one-off for you, make it the way you want.
To Hell with what I or anybody else thinks.

OK, here's what's been happening. I got the tuners and the bridge that I'm going to use. I went the inexpensive route since this bass will probably suck, haha. I got it all from mailbox music.

I've also taken the design and re-made the entire thing in AutoCAD. Photoshop was good but most measurements we're approximations and nothing was exact. Now it's all exact. I'll post a picture from that maybe later today. I've also worked up a new color mockup of it since the redesign. I'll post that later too.

I've picked up a few new tools that I will need like a disc/belt sander and a drum sanding kit for my drill press. I've also spent a lot of time searching the net for places that sell router templates for assorted items like pickups and such, but it looks like I'll be making my own.

Well, it's been a REALLY long time since I've worked on this. I have finalized the design. Here it is, a screen shot from AutoCAD with all dimensions and stuff removed...

The body is currently 3/4" MDF. The Pickup cavities are routed, the bridge screws are pre-drilled, and the pot holes are drilled. Not glamorous I know. I made a router template for the control cavity this afternoon and will probably route that on Friday. I will glue another piece of 3/4" MDF to it to get the proper thinkness probably over the weekend.

Why am I using MDF? because it's cheap and if I screw up, it doesn't cost much to try again. I fully intend on buying some nice wood and making it all again once I have the whole process down. I would rather practice and fail with a $2 piece of MDF than a $70 piece of tone wood.

I'll post a pic of the final body next week.

I like what you did with the back. Huge improvement. Personally I would have made the lower horn just a little longer and thicker and curved it towards the neck just a bit. But not much, just slightly. When you're drawing up a new design its amazing how much moving a line an eighth of an inch over changes the overall look of the bass.

If you like doing the CAD drawings for fun and filling in the wood with photoshop or something thats cool, but one thing I like to do is draw the design out on posterboard and then cut out the middle and put the sheet over whatever top I'm going to use to see what the body is going to look like when I'm done. If you use a nice figured top when you remake the body you might want to try it to get the best figure where you want it.

I really like it. But I think that lower horn is still to thin That's just my opinion. i feel it is out sized by the upperhorn.

Oops. Sorry about that. I started that one a long time ago also, but it didn't get much attention. This one seems to get a lot more so I decided to revive this one.

To address some questions/concerns...

The lower horn: I think I like it because I player a Pedulla ET-6 for several years and it has a VERY short almost non-existant lower horn. To me, the lower horn is cosmetic and not much else. I almost never play sitting. This is another reason to build it in MDF. If when it's done I decide "Man, those guys we're right, this sux" I didn't waste to much money on good wood.

the rounded back: Yes, thank you for people who pointed out that the back needed to be more rounded. I was to close to the problem at the time, I like it much better now. I really DO enjoy hashing out the design in CAD. I worked for several years doing CAD or Architects and Engineers so it just seems natural to use it for this kind of application. I still like to use the path tools in photoshop for the body outline because you have way more control over the curves and points. Transfering that to CAD is a piece of cake.

The top horn: The top horn has been extended by an inch or so putting it just slightly past the 12th fret. I did this for balance.

honestly i think the bottom of the bass is way too flat. i would curve the bottom more. it looks like you could stand it straight up and it wouldn't fall either way.

Yeah, the first one was a little flat in the rear. I like it much better now. I'm going to pull that first image with the Consat design. People might get the wrong idea before they read anything......
