Anyone know a way to MAKE a pick-up winder for very little money? The motor, gears and mounts are easy, but how do I set up something to count windings? really all I need is a way to count the windings while the motor spins. i would like to experiment with my own pickups, i just don't have time to wind them and count them by hand.

Get a bike odometer and set the wheel circumference to 1 meter. The one I bought cost about $12, is accurate to within 10 turns, and took all of 3 minutes to set up..

Far from it - a pro (a good one, at that) on another forum suggested it. I figured if a guy who has made many more coils that I will in a lifetime takes this approach, it's good enough for a hobby guy like me.

another option I've been thinking of trying is a pedometer. they're usually cheap, too. inside is usually a spring-loaded arm with a weight on it, so everytime it gets shaken up and down, it adds a step to the count. rig it up tto be tripped by something passing by and it will count directly.
