Honest opinions on my basses?

Everything is gorgeous except as said above, "the pick guards". Personally I'd have left them off/out completely. Looks as though the pick guards are inlays of wood. Cool touch but I don't like the overall look of them. Maybe a ?better? execution would be just an inlaid outline of the pick guard instead of the whole piece being a different wood. That might be a cool touch.

I like the inlay above the bridge. Very nice touch.

Beautifull basses man! And I've had the chance to play my friend's six string fanned fret which he ordered from Chris, and it has to be one of the most comfortable instruments I've ever played.

That's a really interesting idea that I may think about using, thanks.

The inlays (both basses have one) are ancient alchemy symbols. I think they look cool and a bit more personalization since I used to teach chemistry.

i love love love the faux pickguards! that is an incredible look. i'm not a fan of boutique basses, but i think those are some sharp basses. the pseudo-guild shape rocks, too.

Marcus Willet had Chris build him a custom jazz and it also came out great. The guy can do just about anything.

I thought I saw a jazz bass 4-string in Stambaugh's online gallery. My bass now has a cousin. With all the Stambaugh buzz in this thread, now I feel compelled to send him a deposit on another bass. Thanks a lot, Jared. I thought you were my friend. LOL. At this point all I know is that it will be a fretted fiver. I actually spoke with Chris on the phone twice in the past two weeks. G.A.S. alert.

I just started talking to Chris again too. I'm pretty sure of what I want at this point. A six string multiscale (fan fret) running 36-33" and using a slightly modified version of his ODB body shape:

I'm also thinking of an oil finish with a stain. Like the guitar on the far left in this picture.

The biggest questions left now are wood choices, electronics (I'm thinking Villex, Aero or Delano pickups maybe with a Glockenklang or Pope pre) bolt-on vs neck through (I'm leaning NT) and whether to chamber the body or not.

I forgot what fun it is to plan a custom bass.

They are a bit weird for me, but they look pretty sweet. And if they are satisfying to your bass needs, then more power to you.

Uhg...Chris emailed me last week saying my bass might be completed in about 3 more weeks. All the stammy talk in this thread is making the wait seem so much longer ha! Ordered the bass in Feb. expected completion date end of Aug. so as you can see Chris is a bit behind at the moment :-/

Yeah, Chris seems to make fairly optimistic completion date estimates. After having him build 2 basses I've learned to add three months to whatever initial estimate he gives. The final product is always worth it though.

Unfortunately me too. I had talked to Chris about the idea and was kicking it around a bit, but this thread really convinced me to go this route. Money is still a bit tight following my wedding, but I'm very okay with selling off a couple basses to get the ball rolling on a new Stambaugh.

Thanks everyone for the opinions. I realize this thread was all about aesthetics and the tone and playability are the most important aspects but figuring out the design for this one was something I wanted to try and do sooner rather than later.

And I think I'm getting close to decided on that front.

To say more, I'm sure they are great sounding basses but it just seems like the all natural is overplayed, even more so than all black or black/white.
