Horrible Lineups

Back in the '70's, for those of us who (sort of) remember them... The Dead and The Who, same show.

edg

This was a Bill Graham thing; he was into doing eclectic bills to try to expose people to different types of music. For example, he put Doc Watson, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, the Youngbloods and the New Lost City Ramblers on the same bill with Hendrix and Zeppelin at the '68 Folk-Rock Festival at Santa Clara Fairgrounds.

What sucked about the Who/Dead pairing was that they both did a cover of "Johnny B. Goode". Guess which one was best: neither one. :eyebrow:

I was supposed to see Alice in Chains open for Metallica around 95'. Lane Staley went into rehab a week before the show and they got Candlebox instead. I didn't know til' I got there. Really started to wish I'd come about an hour and a half late.

Hahaha I remember that!!! And it sucked... :bassist:

It's the only time I've been to an arena show where a band basically got heckled off the stage...

Two of the worst I can remember,..Alice Cooper opening for John Mayall,...no one had heard of Cooper yet,.....so it was QUITE the catastrophy! Everyone was geared for a low keyed laid back bluesey evening,....what a surprise. The other show was a triple bill. Boz Scaggs opened, followed by the Mahavishnu Orchestra,....and headlined by,......The Guess Who,.....from fine bluesy soul, to frenetic fusion jazz,....to,...guys in white tuxes playing pop tunes,....truly a strange evening.

Almost forgot:

1967, Anaheim Convention Center (I was 10 yrs. old)

Herman's Hermits - headliner

Strawberry Alarm Clock - second on bill (featuring Steve Rabe of SWR on bass.)

The Who - opening act!; my mom almost made me go home after they busted up their amps.

I'll never forget the Strawberry Alarm Clock members being brought to the stage on litters, like Indian royalty.

I was at an outdoor venue which made it harder to gauge the response overall. I do know that I thought it was a horrible choice! Although the chick I brought with me enjoyed it. I guess it wasn't a total loss.

My old metal band's last gig was a terrible match. It paid alright but everything else was all wrong.

The opening band was one we knew of which was a jazzy sounding elevator music band with some ska style brass player. The next guy was a folk style singer on an acoustic and then it was us. We sounded a bit like Nasum so didn't fit at all.

the worst thing was we were told it was going to be in the park during a town celebration festival.... it turned out to be near the park, in the shopping centre during lunch time...

not the most fun gig i've ever played!
