Horrible Lineups

Jimi Hendrix opening for The Monkees.

I was in a punk band and one time we played CBGBs there was this band that came after us. They came out in 50's country band outfits with fringe and piping all over their clothes and big cowboy hats. They even had hay bails on the stage. They started playing a song that sounded like a slow old county dirge. But then they ripped into this total cowpunk set.

The band was Goober and the Peas and we hung out with them a little afterward. I just found out that Jack White was their drummer at the time.

Not really a bad line up but it sure looked that way at the start.

I was supposed to see Alice in Chains open for Metallica around 95'. Lane Staley went into rehab a week before the show and they got Candlebox instead. I didn't know til' I got there. Really started to wish I'd come about an hour and a half late.

I saw Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden at Molson Park in Ontario, Canada in the 90s. NIN was the last in a long line of bands that day, before Soundgarden as the headliner. NEVER go on after NIN. Both are/were great bands but wow, NIN ruled and Soundgarden just couldn't follow that act.

I never played in any terribly mismatched gigs. Unless you consider "Primus-y" plus Japanese noise plus Brazilian metal plus DOA a bad match. I thought it worked out ok.

A few years back, we had a mega concert here in Toronto, Sars stock. The purpose of the concert was to let the world know, that SARS had not destroyed our city and that we were open for business.
The line up consisted of a number of bands, butthis is what stood out for me!
Justin Timberlake came on just before Rush! Then AC/DC came on, blew half a million people away, only give up the stage for the Stones!
Yes, the Stones were the head liners. The show was actually being simal-cast on tv. It was kinda neat to watch half the audience simply get up an leave, shortly after the Stones hit the stage!
Moral of the story, if your a headline band, don't let AC/DC be your opening act!

I've always enjoyed playing shows with bands in difference genres than mine. Here are a few of my favorites:

Old band (thrashy metal/hardcore mix):

Had a bunch of REALLY talented high school kids in an ambient, Coldplay like band open for our CD release show.

Opened for a couple of nu-metal bands, an acoustic act, and a ska band.

Played with an indieish rock band, a rapper and an absolutely awesome synth pop duo.

New Band (indie/post hardcore/heavy rock 'n roll):

Opened for a show that also consisted of a few guys in their 30's playing 90's-ish pop rock and a CCM pop rock group.

Played with a rapper and an old-school tuff guy hardcore punk act.

In a few weeks we'll be playing a joke show called "When Metal Meets Magic" with two guys who do sensative acoustic covers of pop songs. I'm seriously looking forward to that so much.

Played a show that was (in this order):

Acoustic Guitar/Vox + Box (yeah he was a precussionist and played a box)
Metal (my old band)
90's era alternative

It was.... wierd. Especially because the crowd (a club with around 100 people) cheered balls-out for the acoustic duo and our band, and looked bored as crap for the alternative guys.

Yeah, Rush opening for anybody eh??? Not since I was a young child. Any idea what band was the last that Rush opened for and when?

OK, back onto topic...

Back in the '70's, for those of us who (sort of) remember them... The Dead and The Who, same show.

That's funny you mention that because earlier today I was watching an interview on YouTube from way back when with the boys talking about how they had just recently did that concert.

Yeah, Roger Daltrey swingin' mic cables, Pete Townsend smashing guitars, and Moon destroying drum kits doesn't sit well with 20 minute-long Dark Stars.

phish got back together again?

i can't say i'm surprised and yet i am

Oh yeah. Back in October they announced they were going to do a three-night set in Hampton, VA, then sometime in Dec-Jan they announced a full tour (my buddy and I have tix to go to the show in Asheville, NC June 9th- YES!!!). I think the Bonnaroo thing was mostly rumors up until a couple of weeks ago.
