HOT AMPEG NEWS! PF20T, PF50T, PF112HLF

After much research and deliberation, input from the folks of TB, and with the following in mind:
I've run it through my PA from both the direct outputs and it was KILLER.

I've ordered a Crest Prolite 2.0 DSP.

With this I can:

from my Ampeg PF-20T
- take the preamp balanced line out into the Prolite Channel A input
- take the transformer balanced line out into the Prolite Channel B input
(both at the same time)

If I want or need to I can:
- extend the preamp balanced line out from the Prolite Channel A output to FOH
- extend the transformer balanced line out from the Prolite Channel B output to FOH
(both at the same time)

Use a speakon cable to connect bridge mode to my Neo 410 cabs.

Use one or both channels to one or two 410s for lower wattage use.

Engage HPF.

Rock on !!!

ok guys, following is my first attempt at a simple recording with the PF-20T I just got last night, using my RW Jazz with Fralin splits. This is connected from the transformer balanced line out to a Xenyx 302USB into Audacity. This should give a little idea of that classic Ampeg tone.

The bass sounds good but there is a hell of a lot of hiss going on. I would expect some pretty jaw dropping tones from this amp but instead it's pretty average tone with a lot of hiss. Pass

It comes directly off the output transformer in both new heads, yes. Not only that, but if you'd rather not use a cab with it, you don't have to, unlike the vast majority of tube amps. Set it to 8 ohms, and it inserts its own built-in dummy load in place of the cab.

Without a cab does the amp need to be set at 8 ohms or rather, does it matter if it's set at 8 or 4? Does setting it to 8 ohms engage a dummy load and does the amp not see a dummy load when it's in 4 ohms?

So if I want to send the pf-50t tranny out to the effects return of my TH500 - do I need to switch the ampeg to 8 ohms?

I've been through the manual and I didn't see any mention of this.

As long as the 1/4" output from the PF50T is UNPLUGGED, you can leave it in 8 ohms and run no cab. If there is a cable plugged into the amp, you better have a speaker on the other side. I think the manual has been updated to include running it 4 ohm with no load, but i just flip it to 8 when recording.

If you look up at 'tedsalt's post #1606, he is running it similar to what you are asking, it looks like its in the 8 ohm setting. He seems to have success with that.

I believe the system uses something in-line with that 1/4" output. When its unplugged, regardless of 4 or 8 ohm setting, its safe to run.

hope you are diggin the amp!!

The dummy load inserts itself regardless of the impedance. You can run it at 8 or 4 ohms without a cab. When it first came out, Ampeg said it needed to be at 8 ohms, but the engineering dept. soon corrected that, and that's where the initial confusion about it came from. And to answer the inevitable next question, yes, I've tried it with both and didn't hear a difference :D

I just received the PF-50T and PF-112 hlf this week! I went with the 112 purely to keep the weight as low as possible. This will be the first tube amp I've owned...the tone is something special...really digging it. So far, I am really impressed with how much power this thing puts out...seems completely adequate for my needs. I'll see after this weekend's gigs, one of which is with a 6 piece salsa band, probably the loudest group I currently play with.

I'm also debating whether or not to use this on some recording sessions next week, as it is a new piece of equipment to me that I don't know well yet. I guess I'd be using new (to me) stuff either way, but I just want the engineer to be happy/comfortable. If I use it, should I bring just the PF-50T?

Anyone using a 50 through the SVT-210AV micro cabs?
I have before. Sounds awesome. Won't be the loudest rig you ever heard but the tone is right there.

Bring the PF-50T, set it with knobs at noon (which is flat response), and go out the transformer out and mic the cab. If your engineer doesn't pop a boner, then check him for a pulse.
