HOT AMPEG NEWS! PF20T, PF50T, PF112HLF

Ha! I'll bring it to the session

what's the difference between the preamp out and the transformer?
The preamp out only gives you the preamp while the transformer out gives you the sound of the entire amp along with power tubes and output transformer. Much more tubey sounding to me, although some folks do like the sound of just the preamp, too.

Bring it to the session. He will be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to get a great signal out of, QUICKLY! Unless he has an 1176 sitting in the control room, this amp is killer for recording
I just checked the gear list of the studio and I think he does have one of those "UREI 1176LN" ...I don't know anything about this stuff, but I think I'll end up bringing the Ampeg.

I have before. Sounds awesome. Won't be the loudest rig you ever heard but the tone is right there.

Bring the PF-50T, set it with knobs at noon (which is flat response), and go out the transformer out and mic the cab. If your engineer doesn't pop a boner, then check him for a pulse.

Took my PF-50T to a session and I was told by the engineer that I had to bring it every time I recorded!

I only browsed the last few pages of the thread so hopefully this isn't a total rehash. OK, my PF-50T is arriving tomorrow. Since that amp will likely replace a 1x12 combo I've been using I'm also looking for a 1x12 cab now. A PF-112HLF seems an obvious shortlist candidate but....hey, wait a sec....a "Portaflex" cab whose top don't flip??? What the.....I mean dang, they already did it with the SB-12 so what's the problem? Seriously, the flip top is something I always really dug about my old B-15. I'da sacrificed a couple of extra inches of height on the "PF"-112HLF to be able to transport the head inside. {sigh}.....Is it just me?

if you notice, the cabs that don't flip are all ported, maybe they don't want any potential leaks to unload the driver and reduce efficiency, which is a bigger deal than with the sealed cabs which just become a bit aperiodic.

Mostly it was is they didn't want to make the cab any bigger than it had to be, I believe. Small cabs are in. Personally, I prefer not flipping and the PF112hlf is a killer little tiny cab that I own and use often, but if you want to do that, you have to go PF115he or PF210he.

I have cabs the size of the two flip tops. As much as the traditionalist in me wants a flip top for a couple of the micro stages at regular gigs the cab being those couple of inches smaller will make a difference. Practicality has won out....I'm over the non-flipping top. L&M has a couple on the floor so I'll try one when I pick up my PF-50T tomorrow.

I will say though, the PF-210HE sounds awesome, tried one out at my L&M, if I ever managed to move my old cabs I`m getting at least one.

I'm on the verge of selling my little Ashdown 15 watt amp and several pedals to help fund a PF50t.

Thinking maybe the matching cab would look good under the Christmas tree in December as well.

So, here's the question - 2x10 or 1x15? I'm leaning toward the 1x15, for tradition sake as much as anything (thinking of it as a poor man's B-15 reissue).

My other cabs are 1x12 and I'm a fingerstyle with flats player - no slap.

I went to Sweetwater's Gearfest this year, met the Ampeg dude and saw all the goods. Very nice. Still hoping to see an Ampeg gig bag in the near future.

I like the 210 a little better because it doesn't go quite as low as the 115. The 115 goes crazy low for a sealed cab,

I get your point, but for some that would be an argument in favor of the 1x15. :)

Either way, the more I think about it, the more the much lighter 1x12 seems like a reasonable option too. At home the ability to flip the top doesn't matter to me and if I were to gig with it, I would probably carry the two pieces separately anyway because it would be too heavy with the amp inside. For me the 1x12 might make the most sense - plenty for at home and plenty for my live situation which always has PA support.

What are your thoughts on the 12? EDIT: I just read your post above about the 112. Guess I should browse back through a few of the 82 pages. :-)

I was thinking about that too and later realized the 112 is so much smaller and lighter it's worth it. Also, I would never realistically try to move the 2x10 or 1x15 with the amp in it. The thing would be into back injury territory for me. I would carry the amp separately in the Ampeg gig bag that I'm going to buy as soon as they start making one. I'm now leaning strongly toward the PF50t and the 112 cab.

Anyone using a 50 through the SVT-210AV micro cabs?

Interesting option though it looks like the amp would hang over the sides a smidgen. Also I would wonder about it getting bumped and topple - looks like it would be a little top heavy and unstable if used vertically. According to the specs its even lighter than the PF112. Twenty six pounds for a 2x10 is pretty amazing. Maybe because there is no tweeter (a plus in my mind).

I will have to be patient until the items arrive.
I wonder what the difference can be tonewise between a pf112hlf and an svt112av. Any idea?

My experience with that Ashdown is that it lacks low end (even with the bass maxed out) but it sounds great if you feed it with an Ampeg SCR DI. I may end up selling both to help fund a PF50 ampeg.
