Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind.
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again.
He kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you.
I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years.
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today.
[Spoken:]
Ya' know she came to see him one last time
Oh, we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good.
[Sang:]
He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today...
[Chorus: Dido]
My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I..
got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window..
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad,
it's not so bad..
[1st Chorus: volume gradually grows over raindrop background]
[2nd Chorus: full volume with beat right after "thunder" noise]
[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Slim, I wrote but you still ain't callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
but anyways; f*** it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her?
I'ma name her Bonnie
I read about your Uncle Ronnie too I'm sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some b**** who didn't want him
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your biggest fan
I even got the underground s*** that you did with Skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the s*** you did with Rawkus too, that s*** was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan
This is Stan
[Chorus: Dido]
[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Slim, you still ain't called or wrote, I hope you have a chance
I ain't mad - I just think it's f***** UP you don't answer fans
If you didn't wanna talk to me outside your concert
you didn't have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew
That's my little brother man, he's only six years old
We waited in the blistering cold for you,
four hours and you just said, "No."
That's pretty s***** man - you're like his f***** idol
He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do
I ain't that mad though, I just don't like bein lied to
Remember when we met in Denver - you said if I'd write you
you would write back - see I'm just like you in a way
I never knew my father neither;
he used to always cheat on my mom and beat her
I can relate to what you're saying in your songs
so when I have a s***** day, I drift away and put 'em on
cause I don't really got s*** else so that s*** helps when I'm depressed
I even got a tattoo of your name across the chest
Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds
It's like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me
See everything you say is real, and I respect you cause you tell it
My girlfriend's jealous cause I talk about you 24/7
But she don't know you like I know you Slim, no one does
She don't know what it was like for people like us growin up
You gotta call me man, I'll be the biggest fan you'll ever lose
Sincerely yours, Stan -- P.S.
We should be together too
[Chorus: Dido]
[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Mister-I'm-Too-Good-To-Call-Or-Write-My-Fans,
this'll be the last package I ever send your a**
It's been six months and still no word - I don't deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters;
I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect
So this is my cassette I'm sending you, I hope you hear it
I'm in the car right now, I'm doing 90 on the freeway
Hey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?
You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night"
about that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning
but didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
That's kinda how this is, you coulda rescued me from drowning
Now it's too late - I'm on a 1000 downers now, I'm drowsy
and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped ALL of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you SCREAM about it
I hope your conscience EATS AT YOU and you can't BREATHE without me
See Slim; [*screaming*] Shut up b****! I'm tryin to talk!
Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screamin in the trunk
but I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you
cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too
Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now
Oh s***, I forgot, how'm I supposed to send this s*** out?
[car tires squeal] [CRASH]
.. [brief silence] .. [LOUD splash]
[Chorus: Dido]
[Eminem]
Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
and here's an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the Starter cap
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I musta missed you
Don't think I did that s*** intentionally just to diss you
But what's this s*** you said about you like to cut your wrists too?
I say that s*** just clownin dog,
c'mon - how f***** up is you?
You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling
to help your a** from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And what's this s*** about us meant to be together?
That type of s***'ll make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
before you hurt yourself, I think that you'll be doin just fine
if you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Stan
why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a fan
I just don't want you to do some crazy s***
I seen this one s*** on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
and had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
and in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
D***!

Sorry for the multiple posts, but I'll throw Eminem's "Stan" out there. His merits as an artist are iffy (I personally like him, and he's the only "rap" artist I listen to...that being said, I am an adolescent white girl, so YMMV)...regardless, I think it's pretty sad.
I always thought it was kinda funny. ...but in a sad sort of way. Never came close to being a tear jerker for me.
Now it's too late-I'm on a 1000 downers now, I'm drowsy
and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped ALL of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it

Y'all should check out "Eye Of The Hurricane" by the real David Wilcox (as opposed to that Canadien blues guy).

Me a few days ago said:This was one of the two that started all of this.

Song:
"Chapin's recording of "The Shortest Story", a song he wrote about a dying child and featured in his 1976 live/studio album Greatest Stories Live, was named by author Tom Reynolds in his book I Hate Myself And Want To Die as the second most depressing song of all time."
Lyrics:
I am born today, the sun burns its promise in my eyes;
Mama strikes me and I draw a breath and cry.
Above me a cloud softly tumbles through the sky;
I am glad to be alive.
It is me seventh day, I taste the hunger and I cry;
my brother and sister cling to Mama's side.
She squeezes her breast, but it has nothing to provide;
someone weeps, I fall asleep.
It is twenty days today, Mama does not hold me anymore;
I open my mouth but I am too weak to cry.
Above me a bird slowly crawls across the sky;
why is there nothing now to do but die?
....so did I win the contest?
Me again said:I was telling someone about this song just the other day. I've never heard it. But I've heard OF it. I read Reynolds book and its sequel: Touch Me, I'm Sick: The 52 Creepiest Love Songs You've Ever Heard. IHMAWTD had an article written about each song and why it was particularly depressing. This song's article was about how Mr Reynolds was convinced to accompany a friend on guitar when the friend decided to sing this song AT A CHRISTMAS EVENT.
I picture the faces of their audience and laugh VERY inappropriately.
What started the conversation when I was reminded of those two books was the Pearl Jam cover of Last Kiss. It's in the first book, I think. That article was about how there was a short fashion of teenager-dead-in-a-car-wreck songs for a year or three. I don't remember if he did the article over Last Kiss or just mentioned it and did the article over Tell Laura I love Her, or maybe Teen Angel.
Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, no lyrics needed. Hands down the saddest song I've ever heard in my life.

Never heard the song - but I read this lyric and it messed me up for a day - this is the most gut wrenching thing I've ever read - I still can't shake it![]()
