How can I make myself like beer?

I'm with the people who are saying 'why force yourself to like it?'. If you don't like the the taste then don't drink it! My friends have always had a laugh at my expense for not drinking beer, but OTOH, none of them can handle spirits as well as I can, so I often get the last laugh!

My friends and family have always said to me 'beer is an acquired taste - you'll get used to it'. I just turned around and said

1) Beer tastes bad - why should I have to force myself to like it to conform to the male stereotype of being manly and drinking pints?

2) I like the taste of spirits - whisky, brandy, cognac, (some) rum - if I have the choice of drinking something I like, against something I don't, which am I more likely to choose?

3) Beer has waaay more calories than spirits (mainly because you drink much more).

Then again I have always been 'against the grain'. I don't drink beer, I don't like football, I don't shop at Topman.

A lot of great info and choices here. I've tried many of them...and disliked many of them.

First off I have to agree with several of the posters. Don't like it...don't drink it....and don't let ANY amount of badgering by friends or family members sway you different. I had this problem with my wives's family for the longest time. That's when I picked up on some tasty ways of mixing harder liquors that they couldn't stomach. Of course now they tease me for drinking "Foo-Foo" drinks that taste and work better, (to get drunk), and are cheaper overall. The amount of beer that I would have to drink to get tipsy is phenomenal, (6'4", 278 lbs. takes a lot of alcohol!), and would be rather expensive.

Otherwise...

I first tried Killians red...LOVE it from day 1. Get it in bottle or draft and it must be COOOOOOLD! After that I like Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Bell's Oberon, and when I eat something like Mexican or a steak dinner with a big'o baked tater....Corona with lime!

To me, saying that you don't like beer is like saying that you don't like cocktails. I can understand that some people just don't like to mix sugar and alcohol, so they dislike the idea no matter what it tastes, but for many people it's just that they haven't found the right one.

You really need to try more than one type of beer to know if you like it or not, since there are huge differences between them. To me, that's part of the charm - there really exists a beer culture, and there's always something new to taste.

I'd go find a Brew Pub & order a sampler. I did the tour at the Goose Island brew pub-tried i think it was 5-6 different beers. Was in heaven. Got buzzed for $5, tried a variety of great beers, and got a pint glass.

If you're new to beer/haven't found one that you like yet-keep trying. I made the mistake of trying really really really cheap beer the first few times & I hated it. Once i turned 21, i went to a liquor store and asked the counter guy "What's a good first beer?" and the guy recommended New Castle Brown Ale. I liked it. Started trying other ales-i like them.

I have had a few beers that i didn't like [Guiness] & some that i like a lot. A few of the more mainstream ones that i like are: Dos Equis, Miller Lite, and Fat Tire [is that mainstream??].

I'm learning that i like the smaller craft brews quite a bit too-or at least the companies. For those-Goose Island & Three Floyds are the main ones i'm drinking now. I want to try some Brookyln Beer, too.

There's no beer out there that tastes like fruit punch or cola, but it's got it's own enjoyable taste the way tea, wine, coffee, etc. do for certain people. I personally like beer, love the better ones, tolerate the mediocre ones :D Not everyone likes beer (or tea, wine, coffee, etc) and you're not the only one. You'll probably find one you enjoy at least a little, but there's so much out there you could drink instead - alcoholic and non-alcoholic. To each his own.
