Duracell makes the Quantum 9-volt battery that last a stupid long time. No, haven't done any testing against regular copper tops. The Qunatums look cool....
For one of my battery changes, I used the Quantums and decided that on all of my gigs, I would leave the bass plugged in all the time (Music Man Stingray). At home, I unplug it after practicing, of course, but on the gigs I would just leave it plugged in. I would meter the battery after every couple of weeks.
I noticed no big difference in battery life. I change them when they reach less than 8 volts.
The battery lasted 4 months before I changed it.
Plugging and unplugging during sets on a gig: save battery, put more wear and tear on the output jack.
Leaving the bass plugged in, change batteries slightly more often, save a little wear and tear on the output jack.

BTW, these days, I may unplug it, I may not.
