How can i start doing basic recording fast and cheap!?

welcome to the world of digital recording!

It's a complete pain in the arse till get past the first big hump, which is basically.. uhh, getting it all to work. If you decide to go the zoom way I'd be happy to help you navigate through beginnings of it. Don't know much about other interfaces and programs though.

Oh... DON'T go the the route of any lexicon stuff. I just bought an omega, and I can't resolve latency issues I have with it. Only reason I'm keeping it is because I can record 4 simultaneous drum tracks through it and then do everything else with my zoom.

last note. Zoom also makes some pretty cheap recorders that are pretty user friendly, you may want to check them out. And I don't work for zoom, just think that they give some pretty good bang for the buck.

I'm tryin' to figure a way to just record sound clips of my bass with music and be able to post them. Nothin' to be proud of, but I'm pretty happy where I'm at to have only been playin' about 4 months. I'm learnin' some old motown songs (the main reason I want to play bass) and kind of makin' an easier fun way to play them.....but still sounds pretty good. I made a video I put up on photobucket but it doesn't sound good. Sounds distorted, much better in person. It's just my digi camera. I would like to find somethin' that would allow me to play with music and get a descent sound. Don't care about makin' videos. I'll look into the items mentioned. Or any suggestions?

I would recommend the Zoom B2.1u pedal with USB.

If you already have a decent (or even audible) sound-card, a low-end mixer ($30-50) should suffice. Plug your bass into the mixer, mixer into sound-card, adjust levels, then record with whatever you can find. My cable has RCA connectors (like a tape-deck) on one end, and 1/8" that plugs into the sound-card. The advantage of the mixer is that a) it adjusts line-levels and impedence so your sound-card is happy and b) you can adjust "levels" (volume) to minimize distortion.

You could probably use the built-in Windoze recorder, but something like Audacity is probably better if you can figure it out.

I actually use Cakewalk Sonar (so I'm covered for recording and drums), but for the hardware, a low-end mixer and soundcard works fine for me. Once you get more into recording (I'm not there yet), you'll find you need a more expensive sound-card to get a good sampling-rate and bit-depth.

Unless you have all audio sources coming into the mixer "live", you may run into "latency" problems (delays between when you pluck and hear the sound). Better sound-cards circumvent that. My low-end SoundBlaster Audigy 4 works fine for me.

yeah but dunno what is it gonna make you sound like.....here:
just plug in your bass through your pedals (if any) right into the computer's line in/mic input on the basic sound card and start recording on any software you get

use the controls to keep the levels ok or the signal might turn too hot for the basic on board sound card

I mainly just wanna play around with recording with music and share. Nothin' professional or anything. I'm hopin' there will be someone who can help out on these at guitarcenter...if they stock them in store. I've got tons of questions to ask about these.
