How can you tell if a string is about to break

At least you are aware of it.
I can't lie, if I had ever broken a string , I'd be aware of it too.
Best advice I can give you is just keep an extra pack or 2 of quality strings for back ups and try not to worry about it.
What strings do you use?
I figure, even if you are trolling, the info is still useful for other people, so no harm in talking about it. It's the internet, we get a LOT more trolls than autistic people so please don't take offense.
String breakage would be a very odd thing to troll about though. Usually those topics are a good bit more polarizing and get used to get people riled up.
Maybe i have a problem too. I am obsessed with installing new strings every few sessions. I can't and won't play week old strings. Except flats.

Link Removed I might of taken a break from string breakage had I not found out about this video. I think this video is partially to blame for the recent obsession fuel. I use elixirs and d addario. My obsession with string breakage is odd.

That guy is a fool...will end up in the E.R.... try watching some other guys just play the instruments.
That's not a problem, that's good form LOL.
If I had the money and someone to change my strings, id have new strings every single day lol.
For me, nothing beats that new string sound. So beautifully bright and articulate !!!

I have had a classical guitar for nearly 50 years, and occasionally a string will just break while sitting in its stand, the strings are typically well used at that point and should have been changed anyway. Exactly what causes it to just snap, I have no clue, it just does.
so... you tuned a low E string up to Bb... and it broke... and it caught you by surprise? the only surprise to me is that you have never broken a bass string without literally trying to if i understand you correctly, and yet your only posts on talkbass are about broken strings.
i used to break a lot of guitar strings on one particular axe and then i replaced the bridge. solved that problem pretty quick.
WAY off topic, but it reminded me of something. I remodel houses for a living and sometimes tile has a weird tension on it. You'll make a cut, set the tile down and be doing something else and random tiles will pop (break) woth no one near them. Talk about annoying.
You tuned an E string up to Bb and it caught you by surprise when it yielded?? What did you think was going to happen?
I was expecting to reach an octave. The guy in that video got his guitar low e up to D#
Sounds like an exercise in futility to me. The bass would be almost unplayable by normal means at that tension - did you plan to use it as a Mandoline?
It was years ago. Yeah the tension would be insane. I've gotten a low e up to c once. Those strings are plenty strong. Havan't done any tension tests of that significance on bass in 10 years
