How can you tell if a string is about to break

I haven't broken a string in about 30 years, and even then it was probably due to a crappy bridge with sharp slot edges.
Under normal playing, it is just impossible to break a string that's not defective or the core has rusted away, IMO.

In my case I can tell when I’m 12 and my dumb friend hands me a beaten down cheapo bass and informs me I’m a bass player.
And later on I can tell when I’m stringing hundreds of guitars at work and someone punked me by setting the clutch on the drill we used for speedy winding.
Now I have a foolproof to tell when a string is about to break because my snips are in my hand and the bass is in the other hand.
If you break a bass string that’s not because of the string. Heck, I try as hard as I can to make SRV bends on my guitar and I haven’t broken a 0.009 in probably 7 years.
Best way to tell a string is about to break is to never do a setup.

You quite often feel a dull pressure in the lower abdomen and some internal rumblings and next minute the gas escapes. Oops! Wrong forum. I thought this was the breaking wind thread at DAF ( Digestive Ailments Forum). Apologies
Agreed. It be nice if there was a tuner that warned a string is about to break if overtightened or if it's worn.

That’s the beauty of playing bass. You never do.
For me it’s like a little love note like my wife often leaves me. “Hey you dumb schmuck. You think those strings are going to last forever??” LOL!!!
When a string is difficult to tune and doesn’t stay tuned.

I've never broke a string in the 50+ years I've been playing, so no clue how to tell.
So far i've broken four guitar strings this year. Broke the g after doing a truss rod adjustment. Broke at pitch.
The winding gets messed up and you start seeing the core of the string. But bass strings don't do that IME. They just break.
Kudos to people who have not broken bass strings in years! I've been playing over 30 years and have broken quite a bit of them. The last one was last Wednesday at practice.
