How can you tell if a string is about to break

If there is evidence of damage and/or significant wear, that COULD be considered an indicator of impending string breakage, but not necessarily. Strings can break without warning.
From the vast number of responses by players here over the course of years answering this same question posed repeatedly, it is an extraordinarily rare occurrence and not a concern in the minds of bassists beyond considering having a spare set handy if the unlikely occurrence does arise.
If you want something to worry about, there are better options about which to fret.

First, a pale bluish purple glow appears above near either the nut or the bridge, followed by a faint crackling and the smell of ozone. Then St. Elmo's fire or ball lightning shoots out and up from the tuning peg of the string that is about to break. Finally, a sharp crack and the string is broken.

A quick search under "breaking Strings" reveals quite a few topics, all started by gc** expounding on his creeping fear of strings breaking.
Tiresome, actually.

Then we'll just have to hope someone breaks a string, puts their eye out with the flying metal sheathed string of death and is forced to sit quietly in a dark room with their head heavily bound up.
Edit I frankly should be reported for that hostility.

It's similar to the sound the Six Million Dollar Man made, when he was hoisting something heavy, in slo-mo.
When you here the T followed by WANG, you know you waited a millisecond too long.
The OP breaks strings on purpose and tries to see how much winding he can induce until they pop. These are the only threads he comments on or starts. He is going to indeed hurt himself, instead of just playing the bass like a real musician. I honestly don't think he even has a bass---he is coming over from the guitar side and just posting this nonsense.
