How could anyone not like Victor Wooten?

Everyone has different interests and different tastes in music. Personally, I have never liked anything he has done. He might be a great guy but if I'm not inspired by someone enough to listen to their music, chances are I wouldn't have any interest in trying to meet or hang out with them either.

I know what you mean but the thing is he CAN. Wooten can play some of the sweetest melodic lines, for example, but that's not what most people go to hear him for. When the majority of folks go out to hear Wooten they expect to have their jaws constantly hitting the floor - even after all these years. This is part of the reason I prefer to hear him in the context of the Flecktones. He's able to step back a little and not constantly be the front man there to blow people's minds with his chops.

You may as well ask yourself: "How could anyone not like me?" or "How could anyone not like anchovies on pizza?" or perhaps "How could everyone not like [insert preferred deity here]?"

What a boring world it would be if we all liked the same things and everybody got along nicey-nicey. Ever met someone you immediately disliked, or they disliked you, for no apparent reason?

I like Wooten, and his brother, but I know a pro session bass player who's not so keen on Wooten's style.

I couldn't imagine someone not appreciating Wooten, but then again, there are people out there who couldn't imagine someone not appreciating Travis Barker... and I can't stand him.

People can always find a way to justify their dislike.

I don't like any of his solo albums save for a few great songs, just not my cup of tea. But I love the Flecktones and his incredible improvisations/jams that are on Youtube. IMO nobody is pushing our instrument's limits further than Victor.

I honestly don't understand how somebody could dislike his playing in this video but everyone has their opinion which is just as valid as mine.

I have Travis Bickle on my living room wall. He reminds me of me a lot. wait what? I don't think that's good..... well not really but more "but for the grace of god/fate goes me"...



Anyway as for Wooten. Well i'm sure he's a great guy. But I don't really care how great he is as a person because I don't know him and never will, the only reason I might care about him is for what he makes, which is music I don't care for. Not that I hate him either. He does his thing and he's great at that I suppose. Just not my thing.

I saw him on an episode of studio jams and it was obvious that he didn't have the same jazz skillset as some of the other guys he was playing with, but he just asked questions and talked with complete sincerity and nobody looked down on him for being the fish out of water in the group. And the songs turned out great because he is a great musician.
I don't generally like his solo (or bass and drum) ventures, but when he is laying back and grooving with a band, he is hard to beat as a tasteful pocket bassist.

A agree with this. I don'tknow terribly much about him, but from what i've seen, he is an amazing bassist and seems like a sweet, genuine guy ;)

While I admire his work with the flecktones greatly, I was disappointed to hear him in a different setting. I learned that he was to play a gig at the Exit/In, that once great listening room in his home town, Nashville. So, I went. It was Victor and a brother or two of his (not Family Man). I left after two numbers, quite disappointed. It simply wasn't very good. It was, however, loud.
