How diverse is your bass collection?

  • frets: fretted, fretless, and fretted-fretless hybrid;
  • bodies: solid, semi-hollow, and acoustic;
  • body colors: not so diverse cause mostly natural/brownish, with black and red (used to have white & blue also but no longer);
  • body finishes: used to be all gloss, but now mostly flat/matte;
  • hardware colors: mostly cosmo black, gold, and black (used to have chrome and satin silver but all sold);
  • string materials: stainless steels, nickel plated steels, black nylon, and phosphor bronze;
  • string wounds: rounds, coated rounds, flats, tapes, roller/compressed;
  • string spacings: 10.8, 15.5, 16, 16.5, 19 mm;
  • tunings: EADGBE, BEADGCF, ADG+EADG, BEADGC, and BEADG (used to have F#BEADG but didn't bond with it).

I nearly pulled the trigger on an SRH500 but the G string was only about 2mm from the neck edge while the E string was around 7mm from the edge. If it were a Fender type neck pocket i'd have grabbed it and done some adjustments but the SRH pocket doesn't look so forgiving. They eventually sold it and got another one in....... with exactly the same problem. That's when I pulled the trigger on the 8-string. If I ever see an SRH that's straight i'll probably grab it.

I bought an srh500 knowing it had some issues with construction. For example, the fret line markers were all raised and caused some "fret buzz" lol... the tech at the store tried to fix it, but there was some drama... anyway, did not get fixed, so I ended up returning it. While I had it though, i noticed numerous odd things out of alignment, but the string spacing was fine along the neck. The truss rod cover was super crooked and offset for example.

And just to avoid the confusion, it wasn't mwah type buzzing i experienced, and the tech was able to improve it by sanding the lines.

still have an octave course 8-string on my GAS list. Few times the same as your ESP LTD model appeared on local adds but I'm fine waiting for some others with a non-pointy headstock to appear (had the ESP LTD D6 years ago. Sold it more-less with the same reason, other than the weight).

Each bass that I own has different pickups from the other basses.

4 4 strings
4 5 strings
1 6 string

3 hollow body basses, 2 chambered basses, 1 semi hollow bass.
3 passive basses
6 active basses

1 short scale bass. 8 34 scale basses.

5 basses with maple fingerboards
2 basses with ebony fingerboards
2 basses with rosewood fingerboards

8 made in the USA basses, 1 made in the ROK.

All short scale, passive 4-stringers, but there are solid & semi-hollow bodies, both single-coil and humbucker pups.

Finish-wise, among the single-color ones some are opaque, some transluscent and there are bursts. Fretboards are all rosewood except for one maple.

Yeah, i'd prefer something without a pointy headstock but 8-string basses are pretty hard to find in NZ. I'll probably frankenstein it over the next few years and that headstock may find itself being reshaped.

Moderately diverse. I never wanted just a bunch of similar basses, so all the ones I have are quite different. There are more in the closet, but these stay on the wall for now.

Basically, the electrics are all passive 4 stringers, but hey, I got different scale lengths, different pickup types, plus acousticness and fretlessness in there. Beyond that, I could see getting a short scale fretless electric bass, maybe a baritone guitar, possibly a uke bass. I used to want a 5 string, but that G.A.S. eventually passed, and I actively don't want an active bass.

Always kinda wanted a Sousaphone, though... :woot:

But anyway, a couple of different 4 string electrics and acoustics really covers my various needs
