How do electrons move down a cable?

I honestly thought this was going to be a joke, like, "how do electrons move down a cable?" "one at a time," "to get to the other side," "That's not an electron, THAT'S MY WIFE," "What's the deal with airline food these days?"

I was not expecting semi-serious discussion.

Here's a better, more subtle and less funny one.

Two lead atoms walk into a bar. One says, "I find it fascinating that this electron is in this particular position in the orbital, and has this exact momentum." The other says, "Are you certain?", to which the first replies "No."

When you turn off water and unhook a water line a little and sometimes a lot of water always comes out of that turned off line, but when I unhook an electrical wire it dose not drip, where does the extra electricity go?
Once upon a time I was fixing the front steps for the elderly lady next door. It was quite a job and I called it quits when it got dark the first day and went back the next morning She was waiting for me and was not very happy because I'd left a drop cord plugged in with nothing plugged in to it and she said it laid out there all night with juice running out of it and it was going to make her power bill sky high. I told her I was sorry and to bring me the bill when it came in and I'd take care of it. She never did.

So do people think that when you hit the strings an electron travels from the pickup all the way to the amplifier before a sound comes out?

According to my education that's not the case. Electricity is a wave. The individual electrons move MUCH slower than the electrical energy itself.

Now feel free to disagree :)
The part about electron travel is actually true. Since an audio signal is AC, the electrons just wiggle back and forth and may not move any appreciable distance down the cable unless there's a DC offset. Even with DC current, the electrons travel along the cable at no more than a few miles per hour.

I don't think your description of electricity as a wave is accurate, really. Electricity is an electro-motive force.
