How do I tame a loud bass?

If it's distorting at lower volumes maybe the battery for your onboard preamp is giving out? Or if you've boosted your onboard preamp then it might be overdriving your signal and it will also make your bass loud as jaxx.

If the jack was shorting or touching insulation it could have drawn off at least some highs. It could reduce volume and/or sound anemic. If this condition grew slowly as corrosion building up does you may have had a slow degradation of sound. You may have adjusted your tone and volume to compensate. Changing the jack would bring everything back to original. Just a theory.

Put your amp eq flat. Bass's eq at detents. Then gradually raise bass's volume.
Do lower your pickups. Take battery out. Try with it out. Replace with new. Try that.
Are your strings really low?

Please do all these suggestions. They come from the community as good advice. It sounds from here like overboosted low eq.

Avoid buying pedals or using compression. Those are bandaids. Why? The bass should sound fine with just an amp.

Make sure you aren't playing too hard! Play gently. Great gear can sound bad if you pluck too hard.

Unless I'm mistaken - most MM setups are boost only. There is no center-detente, and 'flat' is all the way off for bass and treble.

AND - just for the sake of correctness - The input jack is on your amp. The bass has an OUTPUT jack.

Yep. Stingrays are inherently hot. Lowering the pickup helps a lot. Mine is almost flush to the body.

Did the same to my (passive) Wal after putting LaBella flats on... the output level from those with the Wal humbucker is ridiculous.

i don't understand or have any idea why changing the bass's Output jack would change the volume .. ??

does your Amp have a 'input' gain ..?? = turn it down ... does it have a 'master volume ' .? + = turn it down ..

lower the pickup ...

change the pickup and go passive ...

are there any internal preamp gain volumes .. ??
