how do you deal with noise complaints

I agree with the suggestions regarding talking to him to see if you can work something out on a schedule. Keep in mind that this guy pays for the house that he lives in and your sound is invading his space. Most of the time, I've found it's not the guitar, vocals, or drums, but the bass. :(
Every time I've gotten a complaint in a sound reinforced room, it has been the bass.
Maybe thin up your tone and add something else like distortion for the fullness that your losing. Then at the gig, crank it up!
Compromise is the best thing I could suggest. Let him know the steps you are taking to work with his concerns.

this guy does not work nights. And he didnt want peace and quiet, he was mowing his grass when he came over to complain. As far as the VMI comment, you'd be surprised what we do and don't learn here. Don't judge on things you don't know about. When he came over I was very respectfully to him but all he could go on and on about was how pissed off he was. So I pretty much told him we were going to play until someone with authority comes and tells us to stop. And to date (knock on wood), no one has. He can live in his own bitter world with no fun or enjoyment, it doesn't bother me. He was the one who came onto my property and started the name calling and threats. Whatever, Im really not all that concerned about it anymore. I will continue to play at my home, during reasonable hours at reasonable volumes.

Oh and just as a reference, I was playing a Mesa BB750 through a 4x10 with the master volume at about 9 o'clock. The guitar players (who use a Mark IV and Thunderverb 50), were at about the same volume level, i.e. not loud at all
so im guessing you slept through the respect for one's neighbor segment.....as i said , because the cops did not say you had to stop, telling the guy to buzz off does not make you look like the good guy here.....your lack of concern for your neighbors just appears selfish, and childish......when you grow up you will perhaps value a little peace and quiet

yes perhaps when I grow up :rollno:

I guess being able to lead a platoon of infantry Marines into a combat situation, file fit reps, plan op orders, attend formal social events such as dinning out outs and Marine Corps birthday balls while upholding very high social manners, physically and educationally train 40+ Officer Candidates before they attend Officer Candidate's School, travel to Uganda, Africa for an entire month to bring labor and financial needs to an orphanage in Lira, Uganda completely funded by my self with no external help, and obtain a very respectable GPA at the top liberal arts University in the country while double majoring in International Studies and History has me labeled as being non grown up and immature.

I think mud slinging generalizations about people on the internet is little more childish.

Again, no where did I say I was disrespectful to him, nor did I ever say I foul mouthed him, or told him I was just going to do whatever I wanted to do. I think perhaps you need to read a bit more closely next time before you make smart ass comments. I asked for advise on how to redeem the situation, not how I could best piss him off. I think that alone shows that Im trying to head in the right direction with this scenario.

And not all old people hate loud music (not that we were even playing loud to begin with), dont know what rock you've been living under.

While these are great accomplishments, I think in order to sustain a lasting peace in your neighborhood, as well as insure a place to play, it would be best to swallow your pride a little in this situation. Even though the neighbor is a chode (we all have them) sometimes you have to bite your tongue for the better good. Welcome to the one of the crappier aspects of life.

ya, one thing I do know how to do is swallow my pride, the military will teach you that. Im probably just going to play at my house for another month or so and then just get a practice space. Im a very non-confrontational person and just dont feel like dealing with this clown. Too bad I have to pay out my own pocket to do so. I will NOT however stop practicing bass in my own home. that is just unreasonable. I have way more important things to do in my life than play "neighbor wars"

Yep

While I'm somewhat inclined to agree, these fellows usually don't follow through on our suggestions. For example, when I implored Money to loaf his sister's boyfriend's shoes, he jumped on the failtrain.

Would pooping elsewhere (say on a piece of wax paper, or something else that would work) and depositing said poop on lawn/shoes at a later time count....or does there have to be a "risk of being seen" factor?
