Haven't read the whole thread, but over here driving at the speed limit doesn't entitle you to sit in whatever the heck lane you like. Nor does it suddenly turn you into a traffic speed cop whose job it is to enforce the limit for other drivers.

When you force someone to pass on the right, you are forcing them into even slower moving traffic, creating an even higher danger, by increasing closing speeds. You may force someone into a situation where they endanger an innocent. I suspect your underlying motivation is not so pure.

If you are in the left lane, and allow someone to get that close to your car without having already moved over (provided there is no one in front of you blocking you, and you can safely move right), you are not watching your mirrors. This tells me all that I need to know about you:

Your driving sucks, you endanger others.

The more you go in and out of lanes the more likly you could accidently cause an accident, i.e someone in the blind spot.

I like to just pick a lane, put on cruise control, and zone out. Drive time = mellow time. There is no hurry. Everyones always in a hurry to go nowhere.

Let's try this again, since many people don't seem to be getting the idea:

In a lot of areas, that's called "obstruction of traffic" and carries a pretty hefty fine.

Move out of the way. What someone else does, as far as speeding, has no effect on you providing you can safely move to the right. Just pay attention, and move to the right when you see another car approaching.

Slower traffic keep right. PASS ON THE LEFT. I don't care how fast I'm going in the left lane, if someone wants to go faster, they have the right of way, IMHO. I move over. I am in constant awareness of what is behind me.

So, are you one of the people that impose this utopian vision of travel, and obstruct the fast lane, ignoring perhaps the most important traffic flow directive; slower traffic keep right?

I hope not. You are not the police. Speed limits are simply not realistic (thus disregarded by 98% of drivers), and are set ignoring the very conclusion put forth by numerous DOT studies (sadly ALL ignored) that indicate that road speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile of travellers on that road.

+1, I'm surprised how many people "fail to stay right" which is illegal in most states.

That's simply the REALITY...not the Disney version...what actually takes place on this planet, on US roads, is that 98% of drivers do 10-15 over. Proven time and again by more studes that I can remember in the 30 years that I have followed such matters.

To prevent accidents, the same studies suggest that the best tool to reduce congestion, increase safety, and reduce accidents, is to diligently enforce the primary rule of proper traffic flow:

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT. KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS.

This is ALSO the LAW in most states.

By violating this rule of traffic flow (or LAW where applicable), you are putting a GREAT NUMBER of the drivers behind you at risk. You are lowering mean traffic speed, and thus in most cases, increasing CLOSING SPEEDS, the cause of MOST freeway accidents.

You are not helping by obstructing traffic, you are in fact risking the lives of MANY others behind you - MORE THAN anyone driving faster than you.

Around here you would have your license revoked and maximum points awarded for:

Unsafe driving
Following too close
Too fast for conditions
Leaving the scene of an accident.

I can't believe how many people freely admit to being, uh, let's say UNSAVORY, and how many people, I mean KIDS... pile on with their "right on, that will show him."

What do I do if someone is tailgating me? Well, if I'm in the fast lane (left) I'm usually going faster than teh speed limit (to pass or if it's not a highway) in which case I do nothing! I ignore the person until I have to change lanes or turn; I'm already going fast in the fast lane (above the speed limit is what I deem fast). But normally I just go with the flow of traffic/speed limit. I've had people tailgate me on one lane roads (one lane each direction), that really bothers me, but I try to relax and ignore the idiots. Reminds me of a joke, "what's the difference between an elephant and a speeding car? the @$%hole is on the outside of an elephant". I find the only way to deal with fast drivers is to relax, ignore them (although watch them, by ignore I mean not let it bother you), and drive carefully yourself. This is exactly why I don't like driving, I much prefer the subway, bus, or bike! Cheaper, better for you, and better for hte environment!

Driving time is NOT "mellow time". It's PAY ATTENTION time. You are in control of over a ton of metal and plastic. I use Cruise Control myself, but is is NOT a license to become a passing lane obstruction.

Your CC has a RESUME feature. That is what it was placed there for. USE IT.

Move right, you are not driving as safely as you have convinced yourself. The blind spot issue is not as responsible for accidents as the closing speed issue. Buy a small stick-on convex spot mirror to apply to your right rear-view, and keep right except to pass.
