How do you feel about body modification?

What is the word fad even mean??!! Honestly in my upmost opinion If some one likes something such as gauging, piercing, or tattoos and they go out and do it than there doing nothing, but being true to them selves. Even tho I've seen gauges too big, piercings too many, and tattoos to stupidly cliché if that person enjoys theses things then good for them being truly happy!! Now if some doesn't like tattoos and they just want to impress there friends by getting a tattoo or etc.. Than I believe that's stupid.

Yeah, fad... it means when people start doing something which has gained in popularity within a particular demographic they like the idea of placing themselves within...

Some people do things to be true to themselves, and many more do them to be true to their demographic of choice. Not nearly as individualistic as they'd like to believe they are.

Well ar least you remmeber what you had tonihjt!

honestly, i think mods are okay to an extent, if your going to do it for attention or without meaning then its completely stupid. and then there is going crazy and that too (i think) isnt cool either.

i personally have a chest piece, of a pokemon, but it has meaning to me and playing pokemon WAS my childhood.

but hey to each his own

p.s. ive wanted a pokemon tattoo since i was 12 and ive held on to it all the way, i got it the day i turned 18 (september 2011)

EDIT: as someone once told me "your body is your temple" and i choose to decorate

Which pokemon? It makes a big difference.

Everyone modifies their body. Life modifies bodies. The idea that our bodies are natural is a social idea. We modify our bodies with every bite of food, with every inoculation, every haircut and shave, dental work, trimmed nails, workout, circumcision, etc. There is no such thing as a "stock" body. We're constantly changing beings in a constantly changing world.

Some of these are inevitable, some of them are to maintain certain social standards, some are to deviate from certain social standards. Where you stand on social adherence and social deviation is something you'll have to work out for yourself, and chances are your views, much like your body, will not stay the same as you age.

Don't care for it personally, but it's YOUR body, so it's your call.

Just make sure your principles are actually that and a not some notion of rebellion disguised as principals.

Something you may well grow out of in a few years.

This thread has been a pretty huge repetition of a few opinions... I'm going to contribute :D

In my opinion, I couldn't care less what someone did. I don't talk to someone differently or treat them differently based on such things. As for the whole "good luck getting a job" thing, I couldn't care less about that either. Them having a job or not makes no difference to my life, and most people who do these things think ahead or get them because they are already working in a place like a tattoo parlour, an alternative clothing store, music store etc. Do what you want... Which relates to the OP. Don't like the bird's new piercings and tats? Do what you want about it. Stay with her, and you'll have to find a way to see past such superficial things. Don't stay with her, deal with the pain of that, but not have a metal faced girlfriend? Do what you want.

P.S Where I come from, full facial tattoos are relatively common. There were pictures of some (although they were incredibly innacurate and exotic) on the first page. Each line tells a different thing about the man and they mean a whole lot more than a cute bunny etc. Maybe this has shaped my view somewhat? It's quite a different view where today they are still associated with criminals and layabouts, whereas Maori see moko as a depiction of their lineage, life and mana. To have one is to have the greatest respect. The spirals are the interconnectedness of all things in life, the non stop death and re-birth of all things. The spirals under the nose are the first sneeze upon being born, the sign of life, and of your mauri (spirit). To me, this is just as important as tattoos and piercings that people truly believe in the significance of. To say they aren't as important is an attempt to exoticise primitive cultures.
