How do you feel about concerts "with" dead musicians?

Hi all,

Some months ago, I saw an advertisement of a tour of a band that I liked a lot (Latin American-Argentinian band Soda Stereo), in which the singer and lead guitarist died many years ago. They were promoting a tour in which the bandleader "sang and played" with their bandmates via a large screen. It was also advertised that they would be bringing some guest vocalists. I found the concept odd and I did not attend that concert.

However, some time afterwards, I watched the streaming and it was very tactful and good as a performance. It felt more like a tribute to the dead bandleader (although I don't recall it being advertised as such) more than a regular concert, but still. After watching that, I had the feeling that something like that could be done well.

More recently, I have also seen Carl Palmer doing something similar with ELP, although I have not watched a full performance.

How do you feel about these type of concerts? Would you be willing to attend one? Do you see it as a tendency for the future?

No, I would have no interest and would much rather see the infusion of "new blood". Can't go wrong if the material is good. OTOH, I expect to see more of this but via AI refinements...thank you, ABBA.

I might go to one out of pure curiosity and if it were really, really cheap. But overall, there is no band I can think of that I'd want to see so much that I'd be willing to watch a hologram version of "them playing".

The way I see it, all good things must come to end and I view using A.I./holograms of dead musicians so they can "keep playing" as simply a cash grab.

I went to see the Zappa hologram thing - The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa. Mainly because Scot Thunes was playing. I've seen Dweezil's band 3 or 4 times. I'd rather see the band Dweezil put together than a digital version with no stage presence or interplay with the band.

I've seen Project/Object and would go see Dweezil. Live musicians interpreting the music.

Not for me. I get nostalgic like anyone else but if "one guy from a band" is performing the hits of that band under the name of that band they need to charge bar-door rate or pass a hat, not Ticketmaster rates because it's just a cover band.

Not the same and not worth it to me. Doesn't make the material less good. But you don't see a concert for the set list, you see it for the people.

interesting thought. I go to a concert to hear wonderful music performed live by great musicians, not to see particular persons onstage. so we both don't like 'necro' shows, but for different reasons ~

There are countless not-dead musicians making great music who barely scratch out a living. I would much rather pay to see one of them perform than give my money to someone profiting off of someone else's corpse.

Last year, we went to a resort/hotel/casino that we enjoy going to a couple times a year, and bought tickets to see an Ac/Dc tribute that happened to be playing one of the nights we were there. I've seen the real band numerous times over the decades, but my wife had never seen them. I didn't expect much, honestly, but figured it would be a fun evening.

It was FANTASTIC! Very well done and sounded great! I told my wife that that's about as close as she would get to seeing the real ac/dc in their prime.

I would much rather see a well thought out tribute band than watch holograms.

Nope on many levels. Cash grab in every way and honestly sickening.

I am totally ok with tribute acts as long as the members all play their parts. But profiting off a star after they have passed with AI/holograms, etc…it's so wrong but so typical of the world we live in today. I much prefer the music of the late 60's-early 80's and my band plays a lot of that (to the best of our abilities), but we're just some people with instruments trying our best to replicate the music we love.
