how do you make weird noises?

i dig the remote control idea... gotta try that when i get home tonight.

you gotta get some whacked out effects pedals... here's my preferances for silly noise:

EHX frequency analyzer
whammy pedal
synth pedals
a couple distortions
drumsticks
e-bow (fred frith made me do it)
delay/loop pedals (green line6 preffered)

snarling dog has a great pedal that's a combo of a wah and a ring modulator..

the CRAZIEST effect pedals in the world are zvex. seriously, check that crap out: www.zvex.com

I've just tried that with several remotes, and it didn't work. :(

One thing I do do (though it's more my guitarists trick) is to get a dictophone (make sure it has it's own speaker), record mad samples on it - things like people talking, fed through an effects processor - and play it back through your pickups. If you then have some effects on - flange, delay are probably the best - you get some truely mad noises.


Why do I want to make mad noises? I play in a progressive metal band where strange noises are frequent. And has anybody else heard of The Cooper Temple Clause? They do them brilliantly.

along the same lines as the remote control/recorded voice through pickup's... you should try out a cell phone. nextel's make a great "pifpifpif" sound come out of any electronic device, even my microwave. of course you can prank call someone on your phone and put them up to the pickups and distort there angry responses to the world.

K, Ok, Ok... I was an electronic noiseician first, then a bassist.. Try this shtick...

1. Find the ghost notes on your bass.
2. harmonics, harmonics, harmonics.
3. pedals, pedals, pedals - don't listen to them multi efects prossesers SUCK I have 30 + stomp boxes... You cant do the same things with a multi... such as reverbing the shi*t out of the signal, the going to an overdrive (tube), then to a delay pedal (crazy feedback type sounds)
4. tap the strings by the nut gently and rythmecly, while you are doing a chord or no chord at all...
5. smack the back of your bass rhythmecly, using the soft of your palm while doing a chord.
6. EXPEREMENT, aka I am not giving away all my hints....

and guys, WHO SAYS the guitarists get to have ALL THE FUN??? hu?... I like makeing noises with my bass, and they sound WAYYYYYY better on bass anyway - contrled feedback on a bass is as close to god as I like to get... Nothin' better then pulling into a noisey soundscape right after ripping it up with a wicked line!... :cool:
