you seem like you know the huge difference between EXPERIMENTING and just MESSING AROUND... :) but there's a lot of kids out there doing it not for a musical piece, but for "impressing the people".

also, what's with the username?? seems like a lot of fun or a lot of pain :D

i'm not going to learn to use a computer yet, because there is still room to learn how to type better on a typewriter. :rolleyes:



just because one person is 'messing around' doesn't mean he cant come up with an idea that someone else could use in a creative and musical way. One man's trash is another's treasure.



That being said, I've seen people experiment with different pens, markers, etc. They make some interesting bouncing and sliding noises. Never tried it myself.

This is just what I was saying - get the best tool for the job - if you want to make weird noises, get a sampler/digital sound production facility!!

If you want to play bass lines, get a bass! ;)

1. Jaco
On the end of live Teen Town, Jaco makes a Fat Albert-like sound by striking the strings with his palm. I have seen Mark King and Will Lee do this too.

You strike the strings with your palm on the neck where the neck meets the body and then slide your palm to the tuners. Or you could go the other way to make an ascending Fat Albert noise.

On sheet music, you occaisionally see "~~~Fat Albert~~~', or if you're playing jazz, "mezzo Fat Albert".

2. Marcus
On Bete Noire, with Bryan Ferry, he has some great inflection using ghost notes, slides, odd clicks. I am reminded how some flamenco guitarists are conversational in their playing using the same techniques.

3. ben Fold
The bassist unplugs his bass and rythmically taps the cord. Bzz-bzz--bzz,

I think #2, Marcus-type inflections, would be the most appreciated, least gimmicky playing.

thanks dave. there are a lot of people out there just making noise just to make noise and not to use it in the right content. they generally get what's coming when they blow up there amp.

here's the story, my friend came up with a rating system... one to five crotch grabs. five being the best, i was feeling alright, but not fabulous, when i signed up here... therefore 3 crotch grabs.

i still think it's important to let loose and ignore convention once in a while.

Eh, I feel like jumping into this mess. I enjoy what noise can do... it can add an interesting background effect. Think how popular feedback is for guitarists... and sometimes it's cool! Hell, Foxy Lady by Hendrix, that feedback at the begining is nessicary. As long as a song isn't JUST noise, it's very possible I'll enjoy it. And let me just say, I love Mr. Bungle... so I think you know my stance on noise!

So what if he is messing around for his own gratification. Me personally, I play bass for me. No one else. Sure I play in front of people so they can enjoy it, but if I didn't do it for me, I wouldn't do it at all.

I think that everyone else would say this too. And if it is fun for him to mess around and make wierd noises, then he should go for it!!

Since when did bass playing have to be so serious? Sometimes, it can be quite fun and entertaining to just have fun with it and mess around.

Music is supposed to be fun. It seems like some people are forgetting that.

Well.. some people might like listening to those wierd noises... someone... anyone? ;)

I can agree with what you are saying Bruce, how it isn't always appropriate to make wierd noises, but you must agree that there is a time and place for everything, even if that is when he is messing around in his bedroom or basement alone, just having fun.

But when Leo Fender made the first Electric Bass, I am sure many, many people out there thought "What the heck is that wierd noise playing the bass part? It isn't a double bass, that's for sure!"

So who knows, maybe someone will put these wierd sounds to good use, and put them somwhere that they fit.

It is like using a pick in a way. Some people see it as wrong, and others see it as one more tool in the tool box. One more sound to add to the plethora of sounds already available.

I saw thousands of people some out to see Merzbow in victoriaville quebec last year!.. they came from all around the world... and he makes pure noise, What you may not enjoy - many other people do - In japan the noise circuit is HUGE, avant garde music is constantly streatching the limits... So to ansure your question - lots (hundreds of thousands) of people enjoy drone, noise, soundscapes, and varius avand garde music!.. :p

Well I suspect this is the worst example and I know from exprience that a lot of aspiring musicians when they're younger, spend a lot of time messing about with effects in their bedroom and then regret later that they weren't actualy learning about music and playing. OK you can waste your time how you want - as long as you realise this is what you're doing!

Well I'm a big fan of avant garde music - like Stockhausen, Schonberg, Xennakis, Soft Machine etc. etc. But this is almost the opposite and nothing like - messing around in your bedroom with cheap effects or trying to make a sound like an elephant!! :rolleyes:
