Expensiveone, Cheap ones, no name ones, guitar pedals, try them all. hook them up any which way and see what you get. Experiment. Maybe you will come up with something interesting. Trust your own ears.

both players demonstrate what you can do live with a bass- Steve Lawson recording and building up loops on the fly, Michael Manring playing multiple parts simultaneously.
the live performance aspect gives it a specialist (muso?) appeal- I doubt the same audience would be watching a sequenced version of the music being reeled off through the P.A.
then there's the visual quality of a bass or guitar being used to create those sounds- what looks better at a live gig - a stationary keyboard player/someone sitting behind a PC/Mac, or a mobile bass or guitar player?
despite what purists might say, the visual side of live performance IS a big part- if it wasn't we might as well take your reasoning further and replace backing bands with a DAT- that's easier, surely?- no mistakes, timing errors, gear breakdowns, trouble getting a mix, feedback problems etc.....
- and we're all out of a job
Well - to avoid getting lost and bogged down in another debate, I have now framed this point in another thread on Steve and Michael's Pros forum.
What was interesting, was that at the clinic, Steve did say something along the lines of - it was about making music and what you used was irrelevent, but I can't remember the exact quote.
Anyway - I am moving on to another thread and will leave this one to fade away........

Hey I make music conctete, and i take offence to that - wait everything you post I take offence too. And mabey you hate Nebauten, but many many peolple around the world love them - actualy thier bassest KICKS!... he has some solo stuff EVERYONE should check out...

It's my subjective opinion and I am fully entitled to it - you can't make me like stuff and you can't make me listen to things I don't like. That would be fascism!!
I do like a lot of Musique Concrete but nothing will influence me to listen to Einsturzenden Neubaten again...
It's like Dimitri Shostakovich said about his 5th Symphony which was written under Stalin's regime - he thought that everybody realised it was saying "you will be joyful" a forced position.
If I don't like something, I don't like it and it's no reason for anybody to "take offence" about that!

umm that one was directed at you bruce, and the name is alex... Listen I am tired of this!!! I could of repored a half dozzen of your post to the moderator - but I don't play thoughs childisg games! Getting one of thsoe stupid little hand fans you can get at a swap meet for 2 bucks and putting turning it on so it hits the strings really fast makes a cool noise as if you were using a bow, keep it away fromt he pickups though.

Actually I resent that - quote any of my posts that breach the guidelines or where I have told anybody what to do. You can't - because I haven't - but you have made frequent personal attacks on me, which are precisely what is prohibited by the rules for this board!

Did anyone mention the song by Mr Big where both Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert used picks superglued to power drills? Again, watch your finish... and fingers... and eyeballs.... yes, I knew there were some reasons why I never tried that one.
Another way to make strange noises is using a delay pedal. Start with a reasonably long delay and lots of repeats. Now twist the delay time down (either fast or slow) and you get some weirdness coming out of the speakers. Play something else and twist the delay time back up.... more sounds. Use enough repeats to enjoy the effect, although roll it down a notch if the sound starts to feedback.
These tricks certainly work on my Line6 DL-4 (a wonderful source of strange and twisted sounds); practical application is limited in many settings but you can use them either for the surprise element or to build up complex layered textures.

I can not spell, this is true. But I did graduate 12 out of 1500 students a few years back... Mind you this fact dies not effect how well I can play bass, and wait - THAT SOUNDED LIKE A PERSONAL ATTACK!!! Maybe I should report that to the moderator???
