Does that mean jaco sucked? Jamerson sucked, too, along with chris squire, JPJ, john entiwhistle, bootsy, mingus...

entwistle slaps he just calls it the typewriter instead. slap does not require necessarily more talent to do it, it just takes more practice time to try and perfect it. unless you're victor wooten, bill dickens or stanely clarke with some pretty unhuman slap ability it does not make you a better bass player. and even then you have what anthony jackson calls "mindless slap" which bill dickens must be addicted to or something because that's all he does. note choice makes the bass player, the ability to know when to play and when not to play.
Does anyone know if Geddy Lee slaps often? The most II've heard him slap was a little fill on a live version of Limelight, but I haven't heard him play a slap line or anything of the sort.
My skills? Take Wooten, Bailey, Jaco, Friedland, P-Nut, Zender, and Flea, mix them all together and you get something 1 million times better than me.

I suck about as much as you would expect someone who is self taught and has played for 20+ years to suck.
My main influences are Geddy Lee, Jaco, John Paul Jones and a whole bunch of Dallas area church bassists that you have never heard of.

i've never heard geddy lee slap anything at all, over the last 20 years that i've seen him play live.
that's not to say that he hasn't, but i would give a lot to hear/see it.

Mingus slaps. Go check out Money Jungle with Duke and Roach.
I can't think of any slap playing by Geddy off the top of my head. On record, one thing that sounds sorta like he's popping a few notes is the intro part to "The Body Electric." But he's probably just plucking the notes really hard.
He said in an interview once that he fooled around with slap-and-pop at home and in the studio, but he much preferred to leave it to the Fleas and Les Claypools of the world (both of whom he said he really liked.)
YES! What a great CD. Everyone should own a copy. It's been in my CD changer for about 6 months now (partly because I can't find the jewel case, but still..)

Excellent CD. I think the story behind it makes it even better, but this is one that should never be out of your CD player anyway. Maybe I'll throw away the jewel case to mine, just to give me an excuse to not have to move it.
Indeed.. the main reason I bought that CD is because I read the story behind it, as explained by Chris Wood and Christian McBride in the October '98 issue of BP.
