I usually like my strings very low. Once I get the neck relief set, I drop the strings to the deck and raise them up enough so that there's no fret buzz anywhere on the neck.

I set the truss rod on the neck until it's almost flat and then set the action for between 2-3 mm at the 12th fret.

1.8mm at 12th, all strings. ~.3mm neck relief measured on the E. All of my basses are set up this way.
