How long do strings last when not installed?

I got a set of strings to have a backup in case the strings on my new bass break. I was wondering how long they last when I don't install them on the bass.

My bass still has the factory strings which are about 1.5 years old. But I don't feel the need to change them yet.

The packaging on the new strings is not airtight anymore. It was pierced by one of the strings and I took a look to see if I got the right size.

It depends on how they're stored.

I always store new strings in sealed Ziploc freezer bags to keep them fresh. Some of them are more than a few years old and still like new.

Much appreciated! Good to know that they will last a while longer. I put an additional bag around them to be sure.

I hope nothing changes about them. I've a couple sets of Pedulla strings and some Hard Rockin Steels I still have to use.

Years. I doubt the freezer bags are necessary.

Unless they have rust or corrosion, they'd be fine IMO.

I've had extra packs of strings in their original packaging stored (in a box in a closet) for 6+ years (I got a good deal at the time). They are always like new when I use them. There is no reason for a string to age if it has never been played, discounting extreme issues that may cause rust.

They only need to last long enough to get you to, and through the gig where you broke a string.

I don't recall seeing an expiration date on strings.

I've honestly never thought about it. How long do they sit in stores? Smaller stores, possibly years.

I've had strings sit for years before using them and they were just fine. I suppose if I left them out in the rain or something I might have a problem... but I've always just kept them in a drawer in my music room.

Metal strong like tree.
Tree strong like bull.
Therefore string also strong like bull.


Best way to tell when strings are old is when you decide to replace them.
Years to decades is a good range when unused.

thanks all! they will be in the package for a while more then. I like how the old strings are now mellower and without that zing, but still with growly mids. on the fretless that is.

Indefinitely maybe? I've bought two ancient string sets from EBay. A set of Picato tapewounds from the '80s and a set of Chromes of a similar vintage. Both were fine, though the Chromes weren't as bright as modern Chromes, but felt nicer for it.

The Picatos had a cartoon of a total 'Keep on Truckin' dude wailing away on guitar.
