How long do you keep up holiday decorations?

Our tree is still up as we have had out of town relatives staying with us. Hopefully we get it down by the end of the weekend. We used the photo of the tree for our E-Christmas card this year. (No fire hazard worry as it is a fake tree)

Took them down today. We typically start a little later than some - I teach college and it's hard to focus on decorating for Christmas until the semester ends, typically around the middle of December. Then we often have lingering celebrations with this or that household of the family till New Year's so we don't usually plan to take them down till after that. And then it's... whenever we have time. Which turned out to be today.

I took both trees down (upstairs and downstairs) after New Years Day. Mrs. Ostie takes down Xmas decorations but leaves winter decorations up. I leave that up to her.

we took our decorations down on the 3rd.

Poll topic: real tree or fake tree?

after many years of getting a real tree each year, in 2020 we finally got a fake tree.

maybe we were spoiled as there was a lot in glendale where a group of friends of the owner came down every year from up north - the same people or their kids - and everyone was nice and happy and a joy. the folks i talked to looked forward to their los angeles trip every year. then the owner passed away, someone else took over, and we stopped seeing as many of the same people, the overall attitude was more businesslike, and then we moved out of the area. something that had been present for a while in los angeles is that tree sales people were no longer getting paid even minimum wage - they only made commissions per sale, so they were always in a rush, pushing more expensive trees, trying to help more people at once, and it wasn't a nice experience. so we got a realistic fake tree and don't regret it as we no longer experience the rushing, the wait time and the overall feeling of being nothing more than a commission to be processed as quickly as possible.

I went over to fake trees long ago. Real trees are expensive and wasteful. I got tired of watering, sweeping up needles, and hauling the dead tree to the dump. I realize that some people have a tradition of real trees, and that’s fine, I’m not telling anybody what they should do. I just think we should be planting trees, not cutting them down. YMMV.

Usually until a week after New Years. It’s dark out, and I do find the lights pleasant and helpful to keep my own spirits up. Plus I took all the time to put them up, so I want to get some use out of them.
