Of course, if I want to play the B string, I lose the use of my favorite thumbrest ... but since no one uses it to play notes anyway, that never happens.

Constantly. The low B is not there for the really low notes for me, it is there so that I can play in E in the 5th position/not have to slack tune/drop D. In fact, I hardly use open strings anymore.
Always.
Actually I switched back to 4 bangers, but string them BEAD just because I use it so much.

All the time.On many of the bass videos on Youtube that I've watched in which the player has a 5 string, the B string remains largely unused. So that made me wonder, how many of you 5 string players use the low B often (when writing basslines etc)?
Carvin basses are very well made and have a great "B" string. I just orders my 3rd Carvin. I have 2 SB5000 (maple/rosewood) and a 5 sting ICON which also has a nice "B" string. I also have a 6 string Ken Smith (CR). The Ken is a great bass but the Carvin are my work horses, just all around great instruments. Carvin is the DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The top of the pickup makes a better thumbrest.
IMO
"How many 5 string players actually use the B?" Interesting question. Wow, how can you not use the 'B' string on a 5 string bass? Not using the 'B' string on a 5 string bass is like having 2 legs but only choosing to walk with one.![]()
