I get the same darn question from my wife. And, yes, it's hard to convey the point in an articulate manner..."see, baby, this Darryl Jones doesn't sound that much like the Duck Dunn..." It's lost on her.

I agree......well DID until yesterday....My wife CONSTANTLY asked why I had so many and I would tell her each sounds different and have differing qualities.

I just got a new bass on Friday and she said "That one sure sounds nice".....I inquired why because I told her she always says they all sound the same....she surprised the heck out of me when she said that she is actually starting to hear differences (maybe she is listening more!!!)

Two. Normally over the years Ive owned 2. Sometimes one. At one time did own three, the 3rd being the other half of a doubleneck bass and guitar. But normal for me is 2.

For some reason wants to do monty python holy hand grenade skit on 2. But refrains. Lol.

I have six basses, for now. There are two five strings: a Stingray and a Hamer Cruise, and four four strings: a modded MIM Jazz, a 82 Precision, a 99 Stingray, and a parts P/J. All of them sound different. All of them sound wonderful. I play the fivers more, lately, but don't honestly have much call to do so.

I own 4 basses...But I honestly don't know how many guitars I own,I have them scattered everywhere.The other week I opened a case I thought was empty and found a guitar I hadn't seen in a couple of years,I'd forgotten I still had it.

Six.. but they are all really different so I don't feel too guilty about having gear that overlaps.. About the only one possibly on the chopping block is the Ampeg.. doesn't really serve a purpose aside from being a bit of a novelty.
