Going way back when I played regularly, I only had one bass. So I had no alternate choice at that time.

In the last few years with a renewed interest in music, I started buying new instruments again. So now, for a gig I would take 2, just in case I break a string or something unexpected occurs.

I take two, and as others have said one might not get played but at least it's there if needed.

The only thing I don't carry a backup for is my amp. And in the case of failure in that area, which happened once with my Line 6, I used my wireless as my preamp into the board and worked it that way. I sometimes wonder why I take the amp and don't just do that all the time but that's another conversation.
